EDS Leakseeker 89

By on June 13, 2013

EDS has made it again this time with the new LeakSeeker 89. Previously they were selling the Leakseeker 82B and my workshop had this model. This tester is great for finding shorted components in the high density board. It could detect the shorted component fast if you know how to use it the proper way. You may need to practice it first before you can begin to try to locate the shorted component in a big circuit board. If your job mainly on repairing  small boards like power supply then it is not necessary to have one. Another name for this kind of  tester that detects the shorted component  are “Short circuit finder” and “short circuit locator”. Please click on the photo below for more information about Leakseeker 89 .

      Hi Waleed,

Yes it can work on laptop board or any board that have lots of components in it. You can get from the distributor by visiting EDS website or you may buy direct from them. The cost of the 82B was about USD200 and this unit I can't find the price yet but I believe it could be in the USD200 range also.

        Hi Jestine,

Very interesting of Leakseeker 89 I never knew about it! It seem save time doing open electronic surgery to find bad part of any components. So I wonder is it really worth it to do this test or whatever reason before repairing it? I do know it a pain to take one part at a time to find a dead one if you don't see any burned mark. Of course you see very light burn on circuit board which is over heat are normal and sometimes are not. Leak Seeker acting like finding a bad virus (O.L.) with out taking any good part out. So experts got any reason of pros and cons about it. If it is worth while then I'll buy it to get this job done faster!

          Hi John,
This tester is only good if you want to locate a dead short component in a high density board. If the component is open circuit then this tester cannot be used. If the board that you are troubleshooting has very less components, a normal ohm meter could easily locate the shorted component and this tester is not necessary.

What method or how is an ohm meter used to function to find open and/or shorts. I don't remember reading anything like that in your e-books. I would appreciate any direction here.

              Hi marq,

Set your meter to ohm range and when you test a component say a diode. If you don't get readings either way means it is open circuit. If you get two readings either way means it is shorted. A good diode should show only one reading. This is the best way to describe about an open and short circuit.

Regarding the leakseeker the function is to locate shorted components between the rail (dc supply voltage line) and ground. Say if there is a capacitor connected between the rail and ground and it gets shorted, the whole system or board would not work. This means when you place your meter set to ohm range between the dc supply line and ground either way you will get two readings (because the capacitor already shorted).

              Hope this helps.

You mean multilayer board call for high density board? So the Leakseeker 89 are design for thin layer of copper or wires inside between these board?

      Hi John,
High density board means there are lots of components in the board. It can be single or multilayer. This tester can detect thin layer copper or wires in any board as long as the component have a dead short.

        Thank you Jestine,

Since I didn't know much about high density board. Which site would be best to learn from? I like to see how it was made and read about it. Have you ever repair inside of components in the board this problem before?

          Hi John,

Actually shorted component in circuit board is quite rare but it can be a common fault in certain type of board model. I personally only came across few and most of the time I could locate the fault with the help of ohm meter. This happened because the board does not have lots of components. The best for you to learn is to get the tester and create a short circuit yourself. From there you can train yourself to be good in tracing such fault. So when real problem happen you can troubleshoot and find the culprit fast. As for the site so far I have never came across such site that teaches you how to locate such fault in circuit board.

Well, so far I haven't tested High density board. Mostly single board I've tested so far. I have repaired from automotive located control AC and heater of the circuit board found some fault of few solder small crack or split from circiut trace on the board. You could not see fine line and I was testing with ohm. I had to use magnify to look up very closely and found few of it. Removed the circuit coating and resolder it. The heater and AC came back to life. I save the cost of high price of replacement these board.

      Hi Edgar,
It is mainly for board that have high density of component. Normal radio and TV do not really need it.

    eds 82
    ============================================================
    eds 82
it is better than eds 89. It is expected that eds 89 goes up to 300ohm i have one year, it goes up to 150 ohms, and i do not have to repeat eds 82 is far better than the newer version and it works fast as a Polar 700 locator error.
