This clothes iron was giving to me by my mom to fix. It was completely dead. No stand by light or any kind of heat whatsoever.

It is an expensive one and I offered my mom to buy a new one since it was mother’s day (March 21.2018) but she refused. As she explained, she had this clothes iron for less than a year. So I promised her to take a look and see what I can do. I took it apart and it looks very clean on the inside.

The wires look brand new. I could see some burn mark but nothing else. Another set of screws and I was able to see more of it.

My chain of thoughts was heading towards the main power switch of the iron. Usually the connections get rusty or burnt and do not connect well.

Here is the main power switch of the clothes iron. It appears to be clean nothing wrong with it. In the repair business we cannot depend on how it looks, it has to be tested in order to find and locate the fault.

Two spots to be checked. One is the white plastic piece and the main connections.

The white plastic piece is supposed to help keep the pressure up on the main two connections otherwise it will not connect. The plastic piece seems to be in good order. The main connections on the other hand are not ok. It was burnt.

The best thing here is to replace the main power switch but in my case, I could not find a replacement. The other solution is to clean the main switch connectors and hope it will last for a while till I get a new replacement. That was the plan.

That was the plastic piece inside the power switch and it was in good shape.

The best way to clean a connector is to get a tiny piece of sand paper, fold it in half which means, the sand paper would be on the outside of the paper and with a tweezers, hold that sand paper and put it between the two metals on that switch. With in/out motions you will be able to clean that.

As you can see, the clothes iron is on standby and it showing the green light.

Once I rotated the switch, the green changed to red and I could feel the heat on the bottom of the clothes iron. This repair was done about eight days ago and so far, it is doing what is supposed to do. Mission accomplished.

The warranty time still had not expired since the iron was only less than a year old?

Albert: it was a little over a year. even it is still under warranty, it will take forever to the get the iron back. that is how things workout in this land. many times one issue is fixed and when we get it back, usually there is another issue that is messed up with it.

NEVER NEVER NEVER use sandpaper to clean contacts (it pits the contacts and it is a early grave for the contacts, etc.). Use a burneshing tool, you can buy one at any electronics store.

hank. I appreciate your input but
1-it is not easy to slide a cleaning tool between the two contacts without bending the contact away from each other therefore the heat thermostat will be effected.
2-I have used a zero level sand paper to clean the contacts. I have been doing that for a long long time and I have not have even one complaint or any device return for repair.
