Hissing Sound In TV

By on June 28, 2013

At the starting my TV produced heave hissing and wiring noise. After few minutes it will disappear. But picture and sound are clear.

Answer:

Hissing sound usually are caused by transformer, inductor/coil due to loose lamination of the core.  An overheated transformer also could cause hissing sound. This is why you need to know if the transformer runs hot or not. If it is very hot and too hot to be touched then suspect  a bad transformer otherwise suspect a loose lamination of the core. Some repair techs called hissing sound as noise or even high pitch sound.

If you came across an equipment that work normally except for the hissing sound, the first thing you do is to gently hit the transformer or even the coil with the handle of the screw driver. If there is no changes probably either the transformer itself is bad or the corresponding component have problem. If the transformer is quite down after you hit it this means there is loose lamination of the core.

What you can do in this case is to dip the transformer into shellac for about an hour and then let it dry for a day. The hissing sound will usually go off.  I had done that few times and each time it worked.

      HI Gavin,

Have you checked if the output voltages from the power supply good and stable? Did the CPU IC receive a steady 5 volt supply? Have you checked if there is any bulged e-caps in the power supply section?

      Hi Rkt,

If the Yoke coil is shorted then the power supply sometimes can produce hissing sound. Before that make sure the B+ supply is good. If it decreased then suspect flyback, HOT or even the yoke coil.

I have a problem with hissing transformer in a LED TV. The sound becomes quieter if I push the board gently but hitting the transformer has no effect.

Do you recommend to desolder it and then soak in shellac and solder it back?

What do you mean by "loose lamination of the core"?

If shellac fails where can I buy transformers? Capacitors are everywhere, but I haven't seen anyone selling trasformers yet.

    Thanks!

      Hi Xvr,

I suggest that you make sure the screws really tighten to the ground in the power supply board. If no dry joints and the hissing sound is till there then you may need to soak it into shellac. Loose lamination meaning the winding in the transformer has become loosen causing vibration. You can read the below link why transformer hum:

      http://www.mgmtransformer.com/faqs/why-do-transformers-hum/

It is hard to buy smps transformer alone because they are uniquely designed. This means if you can't find the transformer, you have to buy the whole board.

Recently I changed the power board for my sharp 21h-sc . It worked for like a minute and went off. When I push the power button I hear hisses around the power PCB and the i.r sensor blinks before it powers off. I left it overnight and in the morning it came on normally. What do you think is causing this ?
The power PCB is an external one. I incorporated it with the TV when the power side refused to respond to repairs.

      Hi Jack,

I suggest that you check the power supply first and make sure it produce all the required output voltages.

Hi my Panasonic has just broke. The screen flashed a couple of times with the channel it's on then It makes a sound like pressure being released a few times and then goes black, the light flashes red but then all totally goes off. What could this be?

      Hi Beth,

It could be power supply fault with bad caps or even faulty mainboard and etc. Without hands on assessment on the set I would not know what will be the actual cause. I suggest that you check and make sure all the output dc voltages from the power supply are good and stable before suspecting the mainboard problem.

      Hi Mohan,

Hissing sound could be coming from Flyback transformer and etc. Once the TV shutdown, this means the Flyback no longer energized thus you won't be able to hear the sound. This means you need to open up the cover and see where is the sound is coming from. Sometimes a bad Flyback you can see a small arcing! If you are a non technical person, leave the TV to a qualified repairer to do the job.

      Hi Nathan,

If you are using a CRT TV then possible the noise came from transformer/flyback transformer. You need to open up TV to check the source of the noise. Sometimes it can be due to some bad components.Without hands on assessment I would not really sure which one is the main cause. This means you need to troubleshoot it.

          Hi ANNE,

It seems to be the problem of the LCD panel and it could be the Tab bonding or COF fault. You need to get a repair tech to check it.
