My son, a seven years boy, approached me with a question: Dad, why I do not have internet connection on this phone? I looked at his lovely face and said, I do not know son, let me take a look at it. Sure enough, when I looked it, there was no signal and when I went to connections in settings, there was no connection found. It was searching but no internet connection to connect to.

wifi problem in iphone

It is a 5c Iphone and if you look where the Wi-Fi signal suppose to be, it is not found. I promised him to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Today, this morning before he went to school, he reminded me of it. So here I am making his wish come true.

The first thing to do is to take out the two screws on the bottom of the phone. Second step is to take out the screen assembly.

how to open iphone screen

Carefully and slowly I attached the opening tool to the phone and with one move, the phone was open and ready to be repaired.

The next step is to disconnect the battery. That is an important thing to remember in repairing any smart phone.

After disconnecting the battery, pull the screen up 90 degrees, you will see the screen shield that is marked with four arrows. Unscrew these one and mark them.

It is very useful to know where every screw come from and make sure it goes back the same place. There are different size screws and if they got mixed up and placed in the wrong hole, it could damage your phone.

Screen is off here and next is to take the board out. There are a lot of screws holding the board. Again, make sure you make every screw that comes off and put it back the way it was when done with the repair.

Another remark that I need to add is to be careful when taking the board off the housing. The antenna cable is still attached to the lower side of the lower side of board

As you can see, the board is off and the next step is to take the Wi-Fi antenna off the board. Here is where it is located.

The problem is very clear why we have no internet connection. Can you see it?

Yes, the Wi-Fi antenna is supposed to have a socket to be connected to the logic board of the phone. It is missing.

I could not find a new antenna replacement so I used one of old ones that I have in the shop. Can you see the difference between the two?

I put the replacement on the phone, put the logic board in the housing connected everything back the way it was and paying extra attention to the screws and I turned on the phone.

As you can see, the Wi-Fi signal is restored and now my son can enjoy the positive side of the World Wide Web. My son loves to watch (you tube) and he loves the educational programs there. Of course, in my house, the internet is monitored with a special device that allows certain sites to be displayed and certain ones to be blocked.

My son is going to be very happy with this repair and I am sure the smile on his face is what I am looking forward to. Mission accomplished.

The IFIXIT opening tool you used in your repair seems like a very valuable tool to have. Sadly 24,95 euro + 14 Euro shipping cost is sadly a too high price for something I may not really use often. Especially since I do not repair Iphones or Apple products normally. Too high a risk because of too high Apple prices. Repairing the new glass Apple phones on its screen and bottom sides are both extremely expensive. Top side repair costs about 300 Euros and bottom side (also glass I'm told) twice that price. Which is what I only would pay for a brandnew 4K UHD TV if I could afford one! And in such cases Apple only gives refurbished parts in return where we would expect brandnew replacement parts warranty wise. And considering that Apple doesn't make big TV quality sets but only small devices they should ask less for them too! And Apple already made those upto 27 inch iMac Apple power PCs unrepairable recently by gluing the screens firmly on to the unit bottom. Because they completely stopped using those extremely handy screen connecting magnets. Why now only firms with very special and expensive machines are able to carry out the replacing and removing of those also very expensive iMac screens. My shopowner friend already lost a lot of money on a couple of new 27 inch iMac repairs because of not being able to open the new iMacs without damaging the screen in the process, and just not being able to fix the Mainboard or Harddisk problems before the screen was removed.

mine was not that expensive. I bought it at ifixit.com and cost only 24 dollars. you can get it on eBay for less than that. I use it very often since i now repair iPhone and other smart phones. if you can not afford it then you can use a suction cup instead, it works the same way.

    Fascinating article Waleed.
But it is puzzling that the socket for the antenna was not there.

It seems that this problem lasts since manufacturing. A socket missing? What about this, Apple?

Good job Waleed. The smile on a child's face is priceless! I hope that missing connector isn't hiding somewhere inside the phone.
