Magnifier lamp with fluorescent light upgraded to LED light

I had this magnifier lamp in my shop for almost 18 years. Recently, the original fluorescent light was broken and when I bought a new one, it lasted only a week. I thought it was a bad fluorescent light so I bought another one; again, in one week time, it was burnt again. So I decided to upgrade the lamp to a LED light and see the result.

This LED lights run on 220 DC but the lamp that I have, runs on AC so I installed a bridge rectifier and I did the measuring. As expected, I got 220 DC volts out.

I connected the inner pins to an AC source.

On the outside pins, I got the negative and the positive DC volts out.

Since I am dealing with a metal housing, I soldered two wires to negative and positive pins and added a heat shrink tubes to isolate the electrical wiring from the metal housing.

These LED lights are made for outdoor lighting. They produce white light and that was the idea to have a bright white light.

They are covered in a plastic shielding and that is even better to attach to a metal house of the lamp.

how to fix led light

This is lamp before the installation of the LED lights. As you can see, it comes with a base and springs that can actually extend to almost half of my work bench.

Before adding the LED light to the base, I used a double sided tape to hold the LED lights in place. Once the double side tape was in place, I stuck the LED lights to the sticky tape and I the result was great.

In the photo it looks a little bit dark but I am guessing because o the shutter speed on that camera. It looks great on my work bench. I am very happy with the result. Mission accomplished.

What a utility modification! Great! I too have one such light and might go for this modification, should it fail! Many thanks!

Parasuraman: it is the best way to go. it does not produce any kind of heat and gives you bright light

Waleed, no way did you get "220V DC" by using 220v AC with a bridge rectifier.

        220V AC x 1.41 = 310V DC

Aqip: yes I did. If I got the 310 volts the LED light would have burnet.

This could be a good project for my tube luminescence magnifier lamp if it also stops working like yours. I found it a couple of years back when it was thrown away by someone and I still use it on my workbench until I need to modify it with white leds.
How many leds did you use? (230V/3V leds?) and what type of outdoor leds did you use?

Albert: I used a 70 cm length of lights with 15 watts rating. you could go for more if you want. adjust it to suit your needs. I am very happy with the outcome. they are 220 DC volts rating. you can use the indoor ones or outdoor ones..it is up to you.

Sadly a search for that exact length, Wattage, Voltage and specification of lights was futile. Can you please give more information on where you exactly bought yours? Aliexpress found zero matching items.

I measured the circumference of my lamp. It was exact 73,5cm which must be exactly like yours is if the same sort of tube fits inside. If I place the ledstripe inside it like you did I need at least 1 meter of ledstripe. Which doesn't match the 70cm length of stripe you say you used? And most stripes have about 60 leds per meter. And I count 90 leds on your stripe. Very unconfirming?

albert: I may be wrong about the size of the LED strips. I think the diameter of the lamp is 70 Cm. since i have more rounds inside the lamp itself, the LED strips might be a little bit more than that diameter. sorry about the confusion. have a blessed day

Thanks Waleed. Sadly now I still do not know what type of leds you used? I bought a 1 meter 5050 220V outdoor led stripe color White. I hope that they are identical to your leds. They are at least already safe for AC 220V because they have the correct wall plug attached.
