Marantz Remote Control No Power/No Display Repaired

I received some Marantz Remote Control from one of the clients. The complaints were no power/ no display. This complaint is very common on this device. But this remote is not like a normal remote control. This is a programmable remote control you can use it especially for your TV, DVD Player, Satellite Receiver, Amplifier, VHS Player and also Lighting Control and AC( Air Conditioning) in short  for Home Automation use. Here is the picture:

marantz remote control repair

These remote controls could develop some other problems too for example not responding when touching on the screen (touch screen) and “hang” while using it. It needs firmware update in order to solve these kinds of problems.

Read the article below how I have solved the no power/no display problem.

marantz remote control repairs

First thing I do was to remove the two screws as seen from the picture below:

 marantz remote control repairing

marantz remote control repairings

Then open from the bottom as seen from the above photo. Finally I saw the main board inside but there was no sign of damage parts.

Next I removed the ribbon cable for the touch screen and connect again the battery to check if the problem is from the touch screen. If the touch screen is the cause of the problem once the ribbon cable is disconnected there will be power once it is turned On. But still there was no power.  So I had to remove all the internal parts and left only the mainboard to troubleshoot.

The first thing I did on the mainboard is to check on the components that are related to the base docking station from the charger. I checked on the big components first which were the SMD Tantalum capacitors and found three of them to be defective.

The one with the 220uf 10 volt I replaced it with 470uf 16 volt. The two capacitors 100uf/16 volt I replaced with 330uf 35 volt. I have used the replacement because I do not have the SMD Tantalum capacitors and the good thing is both replacement although is bigger in size the remote control cover would still be able to close. It was a test using the normal type of electrolytic capacitors but found it to be working good.

And after I have replaced the capacitors see what happen.

There was display and also charging perfectly on the docking station.

Note: In order to update the firmware one has to install the latest software installer to calibrate the touch screen.

Mahin, you can use capacitor higher than the original one if you don't have the same
value specially the volts that's why instead of 10v i am using 16v and for 16v iam using 35v because that 35v it will receive Voltages from the Charger.

Hi Fernando, nice job...I notice you said the three cap were bad and I only saw two normal cap you replace. Can you explain? Also How do you know those were tantalum Caps? they look like diodes to me (just asking.

Andre Gopee,Thanks for the comment its very clear on the picture the parts there is farad and volts and the diode is really different of them if you are familiar of SMD parts you can notice what is the different thanks!

are the two capacitors 100uf 16v are in parallel thats why you put only 1 elec cap 330 uf 35v or are they in series?

    Thank you Fernando.
I like the way you do in step by step.
But I am wondering how you test the capacitors in circuit.
    Congratulations.
Hope to hear more articles from you.

Good job getting the device fixed Fernando. But why not replace the caps with the same smd caps? I think that would be a more reliable repair.

FRIAS: thanks for this report. but what was the problems of these two caps:
    1- they were shorted? and/or
    2- they were opened? and/or
3- their ESR were higher? and /or
4- the value of caps were changed? and not in tolerance?and/or
    5- all the above?!

Wow! That not a bad idea to change from SMD tantalum capacitors to normal type of electrolytic capacitors. Can you imagine what would like if you don't have any of these SMD caps available in stock at the company that you work for and the customer want the remote control ASAP or your boss want that ship out right away, what choice do you have? Not only that, you are so lucky that you can be able to close the cover over the other half of the remote control. You know what Fernando,I have been in the same situation like you trying to get the substitute component when the right component is not available.Well done,Fernando!

... also why you did not suspect to other big ic s and crystal that you showed in the photo .. but directly you changed these two poor TANTALIUM CAPS ...?TANTALIUM caps rarely get defected ?

That's true Beh - SMD tantalum caps are extremely reliable. I would imagine that someone connected the charger backwards or something to blow the tantalum caps.

Good fault finding . Liked the idea of disconnecting additional kit . to find if a difference . Then check of docking station charger . then tracing back to the capacitors . I wasn't aware those were capacitors . looked like larger SMD resistors though with white print . info being ( 100 - 16 ) being 100uF at 16volts . didn't know that not seen this type of component before . Anyway . good servicing . Those remotes can now be put use and not wasted .

    Fantastic !

He replied many times when people say how good he is but dozen times it was asked what made him test the capacitors, what was their condition, how were they tested, but not one reply on this. I think that someone else did the repair and he is just grandstanding. Psychologists say this is usual behavior when a person has low self esteem or low confidence.
