No Tuning and Channel Stored In TV Solved

The complaint of this Singer CRT TV was no tuning and channel stored. No matter how hard you try to tune to the UHF and VHF channel, you still won’t be able to lock on the screen. So what you can see from the TV screen was just the snowy picture-see the below photo.

In order to confirm if it is really the tuner fault, one has to download the Tuner schematic and perform the voltage test. I can’t find the exact diagram so I’m using another TV model for reference.

The first step is to open the cover and access to the tuner. Next, you need to power On the TV and check the AGC, VHF-H, UHF, BM and etc pins. All the voltages seem to be within the specification.

Since all the Tuner pins voltages are within specification so I can now assume the Tuner is the cause of the problem. In my workshop I have a similar TV  (working unit) so I removed the Tuner and replaced it.

Guess what? The TV now can be tuned and the channel can be stored-see the photo below. My repair job is done.

    Good job, Suranga.
How incredibly lucky you were to have an identical TV in your shop. What are you going to do with your newly broken TV now?

I have at least 5 older CRT tv's portable Color and B&W (60's and 70's models) that I wanted to give to anyone that wants them in perfectly working condition. But nobody wants them. It would give me some space back. And since they are perfectly working, I just hate to throw them away. It would be a real shame since I also repaired them in the past by replacing the defect components.

Hello there I liked the article very much but am confused.

You say that the voltages on the tuner pins are all correct but then state that the tuner is faulty?

If it was faulty wouldn't the pin voltages be incorrect?

    Thank you

    Good work.
I try to repair the tuners if possible first, usually flip the can plates off and i find they are plagued with dry joints, rework worst solder joints with iron then i apply liquid flux and apply hot air from rework station to reflow pcb. Then i check for cracked or broken wire from rear of tuner socket to pcb then check dc block capacitor and clipping diodes.
Then i change tuner if not a worker, tuners in thru plate boards are worse to remove.

Great article, but I have a question.. If the voltages were within specs, then why replace the tuner, assuming you were testing the original tuner... otherwise great article...
