panasonic ceiling fan repair

My friend sent to me again another similar fan circuit board (he got it from his friend) with the same complaint- no response from the remote control.  The first component that I checked was the big capacitor and it turned out bad (see photo below)

 ceilingfanrepair

I further checked on the surrounding components and found another capacitor value  was out- .1uf 275v (see photo below).

 celingfanrepairs

I concluded that this fan model have a common fault which is failure in the capacitors.

Note: One of the comments by SKWong in the previous article mentioned was:

“Capacitors in remote ceiling fan always give problem after running a number of years especially the 3 red metalized film capacitors. When you have speed problem check these capacitors.”

ceiling fan capacitor repairing

So please take note on this. If you encountered any ceiling fan with speed problem in the future go directly to check on the 3 capacitors.

When I was in the electronics repair shop to purchase these capacitors, the seller immediately told me that the capacitors are for the remote control ceiling fan. I guess he knew this because there may be a demand for such parts.  The price of .82uf 310v per piece was USD 1.90 and the .1uf 275v was USD 0.9. I bought few more pieces to keep as spare.

For your information, the capacitor that I bought has the website address printed www.szsrdz.com. In fact it is a good marketing idea and this will make more people aware of the manufacturer.

I had a similar experience with a fan control unit which worked well for many years and then one day it began smoking when I was not at home and the kitchen help noticed the burning smell and smoke and immediately put off the fan switch. When I came home I discovered that one of the capacitors was completely charred and the unit not repairable. The fault was that one of the capacitors was totally burned out and could have set fire to the plastic board. This unit was one of those fitted with different capacitors to control the speed or dim lights.

    Hi Justine,
I have a Panasonic ceiling fan with a similar circuit board.
When I set the fan at the 2nd & 3rd speed, it has a buzzing sound similar to a defective ballast from a fluorescent tube.
However, the remote control and the speed for all 3 selections are working fine. Can spoilt red metalized film capacitors cause the irritating sound? Thanks.

            Hi Jestine,
            Sorry for the miscommunication.
The piece I took off was actually the "circular cover" where you have to turn anti-clockwise to remove it. After removing it, I saw three screws which was holding the cap. I just tightened the screws and reattached the cover. Now, everything seems to be fine.
            Thanks again for your input.

    Hi Mr. Jestine,

    Thanks for the sharing.
Recently my National brand ceiling fan has stopped responding to the remote press.
Following the suggestion posted above, I check the big capacitor and found out that the 2.9uF capacitor is giving me 1.x uF only. I believe that particular cap will need replacement.

However, I am having a problem to source for such big capacitor in my area (Penang town area). Many electronics shops seem to be aware of the capacitor that I am looking for (when I brought the cap as sample to show it to them, they immediately know that it is for the remote control fan), but they are not selling such component.

Is there anyone over here could share with me some information on where could I purchase such components?

    regards,
    RS

      Hi Rs,

I suggest that you buy a slightly bigger or smaller uf to test it out. I do not know of anyone in Penang that have this kind of cap. I suggest that you search online to see if you can this kind of cap. Have you checked all the caps or only the 2.9uf cap?

        Hi Mr. Jestine,

Thanks for your reply. I checked all the big caps after unsoldered them out from the main PCB. There are 3 big caps on the board, 5uF, 2.9uF and 82.
Out of the 3, the 2.9uF seems to be out of +/- 10% range.
Would such capacitor in the link link suitable for the replacement?

By the way, is there any safety issue concern if I get a capacitor with slightly bigger or smaller than then 2.9uF value for replacement? Thanks for taking your time to read the comment.

        regards,
        Ryan

I have a kdk ceiling fan with the same motherboard m14c7. The fan just suddenly died... no response.. dead. No remote led light nothing. I removed the pcb and desoldered the 2 capacitor 0.82uf and 0.1uf and replaced them with new ones. It still does not work, no life. What could be wrong ? I check both the mains switch and fuse both ok. What is the next step ?

      Hi Lim,

In your case, you may need to do voltage checking to see if there is AC input and dc in the circuitry or not. For checking AC it is easy there is a white connector marked "L" and N" and it should have 230 vac. Since I have given the set back, I can't show to you what voltage and point to check-sorry.

I have used a multimeter to check the inputs 230vac live detected. I have also tored down the motor and checked the thermal coil protection fuse ( both ok). How do i check the dc voltage ? Is there any other component that can give such a dead symptom ? I am puzzled. What could it be ?

          Hi Dave,

Checking DC voltage means you have to turn the set On and perform the voltage or even signal (waveform test). Having the schematic will be an added advantage for you. If behind the board have an IC then you have to know what type of IC and find out from the datasheet the input dc supply pin, output pin and etc.

    1) how can i repair it?

    3) does it have to do with any faulty to my fans or house electrical wiring

there's no sound before I switched it on... but once its "on", the humming sound starts at a very low sound... after a while, the sound becomes so loud... sound is the same at all speed... but if i switch it off, then turn it on back, the sound level remains...

Not sure if there's any connection, but when i hand press the center part of the fan (the one which shows the fan logo) giving some pressure to it, the sound stops... as if theres a loose part

Is there any way to bypass the entire pcb and connect the live and neutral wires directly to the black, white and red wires? I would then add an external fan speed controller attached to the wall.

I had previously fixed the capacitor but it is getting spoilt again. I dont want this to take up anymore of my time.

Can consider to buy new rather than change the board because at the same time the fan also started noisy. But, for testing, fun and hobby, I'm looking for the capacitor online and don't know type of capacitor for the fan.

I opened up the fan and thought that just replaced the fuse will fix the problem, and after I turned on the power and immediately it blew up the new fuse. Can this due to one of the capacitors?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Liaw,

When a fuse blown, usually there will be one or more than one components shorted. Usually it would be the semiconductor components such as diode, power IC, transistor and etc. In your case (lightning struck), I suspect the bridge diodes could be shorted that had caused the fuse to blow and not the capacitor.

      Hi Liaw,

Sorry, I have no contact of the fan repairer and no longer do repair works for customers. Perhaps you need to Google it and try to search it. Or you can ask those electrical shops to see if they know of someone that can repair your fan.

I have a National Ceiling Fan where after running for about 20 min, it started produced knocking sound as if there is a pull-back as it rotates. The shaft which is hanging onto the ceiling shakes as if there is a inertia (pull-back) as it rotates. Then, I switched it off. When I switch it on again after a few min, the sound came back.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

      Hi Ling Ling,

You need to get a technician to check on the fan. Probably there could be electronics fault.

    Hi Jestine

I bought a panasonic fan in KL and brought it to India in 2008. Now this fan has started giving trouble .
It does not respond to report
It runs at a constant speed with masking tremendous vibratory noise .
I tried searching this capacitor of.82Ufd or eqivalent but failed so far.

If I want to make this fan direct what do U think I should do . Can you guide me on that

    Hi Jestine
Thanks for your blog. I am from India and I purchased a Panasonic fan seven years ago from KL . It developed a problem of jerking and running on a single speed. It used to be very disturbing and was not responding to remote also.

I changed the capacitor with 1 ufd. It is working perfect. Thanks for your help

Regards to the 3 "speed capacitors", 1.8uFJ500VAC, 5.0uFK250VAC and 2.4uFK250VAC.

May I ask what is the J and Ks (after the uF) means?

    Thanks,

    Hi Jestine ...

i am having malfuntion M14C7 board from my panasonic fan.
i was just wondering, how do we know which capacitor is out ? ... after reading all the sharing ... i know there are 4 capacitors, the problem with the current PCB .. the fan will start of very slowly ... like needing push ... and then it will stays at slow speed no matter which selection i made.

i have a multimetre .. but i am not sure how can i test the capacitor by using the multimetre ..

      Hi Sj,

You need a digital capacitance meter to test it and find out the bad one. If you do not wish to invest in this meter, you can just replace all the capacitors since they are not expensive.

    Hi Justine,

I'm having trouble sourcing the red capacitors (1.8uF, 5uF and 2.4uF). Do you mind suggesting alternative replacement in element14 for these capacitors?

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi RC,
For fan capacitors, the best is to use back original value. Other values than the original one can change the speed of the fan. Try search from aliexpress.com to look for the cap you need.

    Hi Jestine Yong,
Just came across your article and found it interesting and helpful. I have several KDK Z60WS with 7-spd fan. Initially I replaced the whole PCB and its very costly. It took me a long time to figure out that the culprit is the 275V 0.82uf capacitance and managed to save several boards later just by replacing this capacitor. Despite this, I have one particular problem which you may be able to help. In one of the board, after replacing that faulty capacitor, the fan works properly in changing speed. But when switch off into standby mode using the remote controller, the fan still continue to swing very slowly non-stop. I had to switch off the main switch. Could you figure out what is the problem. Thanks.

      Hi Bernard,

I have not seen this kind of circuit board and problem before thus unable to tell you what is exactly wrong with the board. Some fan models may use relay (I'm not sure about yours) and the contact can give problems. In your case, it can be capacitor value out, high ohm in resistors, control IC faults and etc.

    Hi Jestine

My fan (KDK R48SP) problem is remote control no response. I have replaced 0.82uF and 1.6uF cap with new ones, as both are measuring under value (0.55uF and 1.03uF respectively).

However, remote still doesn’t work. I measured the other two big caps, it reads 2.8uF. Should be fine.

Not sure what am I missing here.

Would appreciate very much, if you can share your thoughts.

      Hi Jac,

In this case, it could be the remote control fault or the control board. You need to check if the control board is getting DC supply to the IC or not. If no DC supply voltage, possible the power section have problem.

    hi jestine,

i have the same board except there is no black cap like shown by arrow above. they put a jumper instead on the slot(and it worked fine before)

the yellow one is fine, 0.1u.

my question is, are those 3 brown caps responsible only for fan speeds or damaged brown caps can actually stop your fan from even spinning? i hear beeps when i press the remote so i can assume that miliamp-dc circuits is working fine. 1 of the brown cap is broken, 1 is fine, the other 1 is outside its +/- rate

    thanks.

      Hi Mar,

If one of the brown caps have problem it can also cause your fan not to spin. I suggest that you test all the caps and replace the bad one and retest.

Usually the cap in the Ac input area. If you have the capacitance meter just check all the big caps in the circuit.

Try replace the remote control batteries first and retest and make sure the battery compartment contact are clean. If all okay then you may need to check the capacitors in the circuit board.
