Customer sent this Panasonic RX-VT80 Portable Stereo Component System for repair with the complaint of the sound coming on and off intermittently especially when adjusting the volume control.

From experience,  this kind of problem is mainly due to bad volume control potentiometer. Once the cover was opened, I could see few circuit boards but I only want to search for the board where the potentiometer was attached.

Found the potentiometer-see the photo below:

I soldered out the potentiometer and read the code and it was C503 which means 50 K Ohm. I have two choices, the first is to repair it and the second one is to replace it.

I tried opened and cleaned the potentiometer first and if not successful I will buy a new one and fix it in. It was quite easy to open and used a spray cleaner chemical to clean off the dust and dirt inside. It took me couple of minutes and not that difficult to open the potentiometer cover – see the photos below:

Once done cleaning it and put back and power On, the sound came back and no longer have problem. Assuming if the sound still have problem I would replace it with a new part and retest it.

Good job Mr.Suranga. I am also familiar with opening those 1 potentiometer stereo volume controls myself too. In the early days they used 2 'mono' potentiometers on one axe, so these stereo controls are made quite ingenious! I had to repair 3 cut through carbon tracks with silverglue which can be read on Jestine's pages too. Because replacing these stereo potentiometers isn't exactly cheap and they are not easy to find, repairing them is the best option left.

Yes, indeed a good job! Many times, the tracks would have got scraped off due to wear and tear! In such cases, it is very difficult.

Great job Suranga. Many people opt for spraying inside the pot and solved trouble, but me prefer (like you) to open the pot and repair more deeply the pot.
