lg dvd player repair

The complaint of this LG DVD receiver and player with model HT355SD was no power.  No power symptom can be caused by many factors such as open main fuse, bad on/off switch, bad power components, shorted mainboard and etc.

I had to open up the casing (see the photo below) in order to see if there is any components in the power section that had burnt and etc. The main fuse was good and no burnt components.

circuit board

What I saw was ants nest surrounding the legs of the power IC and power FET. The circuit track of the power IC was corroded and this could be the problem of no power symptom. See the three photos below:

power fet

As usual, just before I replace the components I will check the surrounding components and I found a zener diode shorted. If you would like to learn how to check components like a professional you can get Jestine’s Ebook on testing components. This ebook is a must for all beginners.

Next I cleaned the board fully and bought the new components-one zener diode and power ICE3BR4765C and fixed into the board and power On.

new electronic components

The power came back and worked beautifully. It was an easy job and the parts also not expensive.

Great! Another set saved! Ants are sometimes not only ants in pants, in Electronic Equipment too! I am working on a Philips DVD player, where the ants have spoiled the mother board! (Strange coincidence)

Nice job Suranga! But this happens not only in India.

Also in the southeast US these invasive 'crazy ants' are chewing up electronics in the southeast US, and researchers believe the tiny insects have caused $146.5 million in damage to iPhones, laptops, DVR cables, and other gadgets in just one year in the state of Texas.

The crazy ants are attracted to electrical wiring, and their electrocuted carcasses are often found scattered around power outlets, transformers and switches. This invasive species from Brazil and Argentina is immune to chemicals that kill off other types of insects, such as the common red ant, and residents with an infestation may need to call pest control to rid their homes of them.

The tawny crazy ant, formerly known as the raspberry crazy ant, was first discovered in Houston in 2002, and now exists in several counties in Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. This species is called “crazy” because the trail it leaves behind is so irregular and erratic.

In a one-year period, these ants destroyed $146.5 million worth of electronics and wiring in the state of Texas, researchers from Texas A&M University told ABC News. But even if the ants fail to chew up the products, their carcasses can cause just as much destruction. Researchers found that when the ants are electrocuted, they wave their abdomens in the air, omitting a particular scent that attracts other ants. As each of the ants dies off, the bodies build up in electric switches or devices, causing switches to get stuck or the system to short-circuit.

So we are warned for this invasion of Insects. We in The Netherlands also detected the Asian Tiger Mosquito in a local car tires plant.

    Hi,
Can anyone throw some light about the equivalent no. of a shorted/exploded ic in the power board of two Soyer/F&D DVD players. In the Soyer model the no. was 4SY103 and in the F&D DVD player which exploded (probably due to overheating) after a few hours of play was partly visible as 5805 or something similar. Thanks and much obliged.
