Power Problem In Hitachi 32″ LCD TV Solved

A 32” Hitachi LCD TV came in with the complaint of can’t power on. The power LED blinks few times and stayed red. This seems to be the power supply problem. After the removal of the big back cover with tons of screws finally I could see few circuit boards. The first thing I looked at was the power board to see if there are any bulged e-caps.  Just under the big heatsink I saw two bulged e-caps.

In order to remove the bad e-caps one need to remove the heatsink first. After removed the bad e-caps I proceeded to check on the other e-caps and found one to be marginal and I replaced that e-cap too. Total replacement of 3 e-caps put the TV back to service.

Conclusion-There are always simple and tough problems in electronics equipment.  Don’t always assume that it is very difficult to repair electronics equipment. One got to open the set up and check on it. If you did not open it up you would not know the answer.  Even if it is tough to repair then take it as a lesson for you to learn. The more tough problems that you have repaired the better knowledge you will have on that equipment.  If you are new to LCD TV repair and would like to know more about LCD TV internal boards you can click on the below link:

why did you remove the heatsink and diodes and not just the heat sink?

      Hi Ivor,

Because the diodes is attached to the heatsink secured by screws. This means soldering out only the heatsink legs would not be able to pull it out unless you also need to solder out the diodes legs.

      Hi Ruben,

If the OSD menu affected as well then the problem could be a bad LCD panel otherwise check on the LVDS cable and the T-con board.

The usual CrapXon capacitors again. And the Samxon didn't fare very well either. Seen plenty of them over the years, including those in LCD monitors also. The proximity of the heatsink to the capacitors especially the top area makes it worse, as heat can cause faster degradation of these (already crappy) capacitors.

Jestine your repair tips along with an e-book I purchased from you some time ago has helped me to repair an Olevia 42inch tv that had a similar problem to what is described in this article. I replaced all seven electrolytic capacitors on the power supply board that had some bulging and tested below their ratings. It now powers on again and is working fine. Keep up the good work.

      HI Uday,

I suggest that you recheck that area and you need to check filer cap with ESR meter. If you do not have this meter direct replace the e-caps and retest.

      HI Chinedu,

      Standby means either:

      1) CPU IC got 5 volt but cannot send out the "On" signal due to the ic itself have problem or the EEPROM IC have corrupted

      2) CPU IC could send out "On" signal but it can reach the main power supply section due to bad components in the optoisolator ic and surrounding components problem

      3) On signal can reach the main power supply but main power supply it self have bad components like shorted secondary diodes, bad power ic and etc.

      4) There are shorted components in the secondary side.

          Hi Lindsey,

Perhaps you need to check the filter output caps with ESR meter as some caps will not bulge. If you do not have an ESR meter try check which output voltage line where the voltage is abnormal and then direct replace the e-caps in that line and retest.

Greetings.......Kindly advise on my 32" Hitachi lcd tv. The power comes on but all pitch black; no sound or pictures. I checked for blown capacitors and all seems fine, i tested them using multimeter and they are fine. Then i checked the icu and noticed a path of it looks burnt with tiny hole. Now my problem is i cant get the number / code off the icu on the board as part of it is gone and no one seems to be able to help.......How do i get to replace the icu now if i cant identify it by code. I used model number and still no help. Can i use generic icu ? Prompt response pls......thanks

      5) The DC supply input to the MCU/EEPROM IC may be improper. Make sure the DC supply is good.

    Hi Jestine
I have an Hitachi LCD tv 42" 7 years old
recently i'm having a problem turning it on from standby.
the problem is when I press the power button on the remote control the led turns to green and I get sound but no picture.
if I turn it off and on again it comes on OK.
some times I have to turn it off and on 2 or 3 times or more but eventually it will come on OK.
I think it can be a bad relay or electronic switch.
    please advise

      Hi Willy,

If no 5 volt output it can be caused by any components. This means you have to check the components in the primary side and no shorted output diode in secondary side. If all checked to be good then you need to replace the power ic and retest.

    Hi,
I used an HDMI splitter on my Hitachi LCD 42" TV, when I connected the AC adapter I did not change it to 5v from 9v. Well it fried it and because it was connected to my TV via the HDMI port it looks like it did something to my TV. Anyway, there is no power, no stand by red light. I trouble shoot it but nothing works. Any ideas on what else I could do? I will appreciate any help.

      Hi Roland,

What have you checked in the TV? Have you checked if the power supply has any output voltages?

Hi Jestine! and Thank you!!! so much for the capacitor's tip. You saved me a bunch of time, and probably the TV as well.
I have the exact! same Hitachi TV and I am not sure if I would have found the caps without your help. They were very well hidden. And I am definitely do not have your trouble shooting skills.

For my TV. all 3 of the 470m caps were dead. In addition to the two 2200m caps.
So I ended up replacing 5 caps in total.

      Hi Ely,

Flickering can be due to many courses like unstable output dc voltages from the power supply, bad LCD panel, weak backlight, LVDS cable not seated properly and etc. Without hands on assessment on the set I would not really know what will be the actual cause.

    Hello Mr jestin
I have hitachi model L32N03A I got problems then I change 3 capacity after that when I try to start the TV the led light flashing 3 time red and blue color after that the TV start normally. Why it's flashing 3 time before I start tv or need factory reset. Thanks
