Repairing Computer Motherboard

CPU MOTHERBOARD

I got a good blog post by Ranotosh on Computer motherboard repair. Here is the tips:

First of all thanks for your website,it is very useful for persons who are in the electronics field. I am a electronics hobbiest from kolkata(india). I want to share my experiences in motherboard repairing with the readers of your blog.

1. Check for any physical damage in the board i.e. burnt out parts, inflated (bulged) electrolytic capacitors, damaged tracks, burnt out ram slot, cracked chips etc.

2.In many cases SMPS stops in few seconds after power on,this is a indication of a short circuit in the motherboard. In most cases FET in the voltage regulation circuit get shorted.one can check with a multimeter for any shorted FET. Sometimes chips may get shorted, in that case one has to forcefully power on SMPS by shorting green and black wire of SMPS and look for any overheated chips.

3. Replace the bios from a similar motherboard.

These are the few basic techniques of chip level motherboard repair.

      HI Saiful,

It could be the bad e-cps problem. Try look at the board to see if there is any bulged e-caps.

      HI Siddanth,

It could be motherboard or the power supply problem. Assuming is the motherboard problem it can be bad e-caps or failure in one of the IC. You need a PC post card to find out the location of the faulty section.

      Hi Hairus,

When to repair the UPS and spindle motor? If the set have problem then you start to repair it. UPS common fault is battery problem or even eeprom ic have corrupted. As for the spindle motor check the resistance of the spindle motor as a weak spindle motor have high resistance and will affect the overall RPM.

In such cases it is hard to detect unless if you have the PC Post Card. Before that make sure the ram is working and support your type of board.

      Hi SHEZI,

Usually it can't be done. Try to enter the service mode and see if there is any setting that can increase the brightness. You may need to find the service manual in order to log into the service mode. As for the motherboard, it could be the clock generator ic problem. make sure the crystal frequency is correct.

      HI Altaf,

It can due to the part that you use :

      1) not original
      2) different part number used
      3) improper gate signal
      4) bad corresponding component

You need to use oscilloscope and see the waveform and compare with a good mosfet gate signal.

If you are replacing with an exact replacement part.
The failure of the subsequent replacement parts is probably due t the reason why the original part failed.
EXCESSIVE current or voltage through the device.
These devices have a specified amount of current they can handle.
Something in the circuit is pulling more current to flow through the device causing it to fail.
HINT: a shorted/leaky E-cap, bad HV transformer, or other leaky components will cause enough extra current to flow through it to exceed it's engineered current handling capability....causing it to burn up.

Few factors that can cause the chip to overheat like the quality of the ic used (certain ICs have life span), improper dc supply voltage, ventilation design problem, dried heat compound and bad solder joints of the small solder ball.

      Hi Raju,

It is difficult to trace a motherboard when it can't start because it can be due to many causes such as bad Bios, Bad VRM section, bad Ram, shorted capacitors and etc. I suggest that you get the right PC Post card for your type of motherboard first as this can eliminate the guessing game. Before that make sure all the VRM circuit is producing all the right output voltages.

      Hi Pradhum,

If you have replaced with a new ATX power supply and the PC still isn't working then it is the motherboard fault. It can be due to many reasons from bad Ram, Rom, shorted components up till bad ICs.
