A doctor and a friend of mine brought this device for repair. The customer explained that while the heating device was up and running it stopped working and it was not due to an electrical issue in the house.

how to fix heating device

It is a one unit device, just plug into power, choose the right setting and let the heating/cold air flow.

In this case it was completely dead and as seen in the photo there is no sign of life into it.

I took the cover off for further check up and by visual inspection I could not see anything wrong with it.

It was very clear to me that this device was opened before because if you look to the screws they are not fully tightened.

The customer explained that he took it to a technician but it was not repaired.

The first logical thing to do is to check for any voltage going inside the machine and as seen in the photo, the device was getting the right voltage but for some reason, it was not powering on.

bad thermal fuse in transformer

I traced the power rail all the way to this transformer and it was getting the 220 AC volts but it was not producing the 12 AC volts to power on the device. So I found the fault but now I need to find a replacement.

2 amp 130 thermal fuse

I could not find any replacement for this step down transformer but I found a way to get it up and running again. When I flipped the transformer to the other side I could find the thermal fuse in there and my hope was to see this fuse open because I have plenty of these fuses available in my shop.

checking thermal fuse

So my expecting and my hope came true as I tested this thermal fuse and as seen, it was open and that put a smile on my face.

I was hoping that this was the only fault in this device so I replaced it and hoped for the best.

It was a 2 amp with 130 degrees thermal fuse so I went ahead and replaced with a brand new one, added an isolation tape on top and I re soldered it on board.

Mission Accomplished.

Blowing of thermal fuse is an indication that the TX is over heating and might fail again. Hope you took reading of it so that you can go for a replacement later, if found necessary. Many times, when the primary winding opens, and there is no writing of output voltages, we may have to guess and fix a replacement.

Parasuraman: yes I did take a note of it but so far it is up and running according to the customer so we are ok there. have a blessed day

Like Parasuraman's reply with concern about replacing the thermal fuse, I hope you did check the temperature of the transformer and also the current through the primary coil? Still odd that you this time didn't find a good and simple replacement transformer since you most of the time do have lots of parts in stock.

Albert: yes I Understand his concern and according to the customer, the device is still up and running no problems there. yes, I did not find a replacement for the transformer and that is not odd since I do not deal with such devices on a regular basis. have a blessed day

were do you check the 12v out on the transformer?

Hector: at the output of the pins of the transformer. observe where the input comes in and on the other side of the transformer is the output. have a blessed day

Good job, Waleed. You were lucky that you got to the thermal fuse easily. I dealt some years ago with the same problem, but in my case, the thermal fuse was immersed in the transformer windings, in such a way that any attempt to reach it could destroy the transformer with certainty. The solution was to replace by another transformer, however without the thermal fuse. There was not at that moment any other way to restore the device (a sound mixer).

Henrique: thanks man. they are usually on the top of the windings but you still have to be carefull with taking it out, the wires are very sensitive and you might end up cutting the winding off. have a blessed day

Hi. Replacing the small fuse with a 2 amp fuse is not a good idea. Thermal fuses detect the temperature of a device and if that temperature exceeds the rating of the fuse it will open the circuit. A 2 amp fuse would not open until the 2 amp rating is exceeded and would allow the defective transformer to exceed it's maximum operating temperature. Possibly causing a fire. If that caused personal injury you could be held liable. On other hand if at least replacing with a 2 amp fuse to help out a disabled person and you feel confident the transformer is ok you did the right thing. Often fuses are hard to identify and also can be difficult to get replacements for. In these difficult times you did the right thing. ! May God bless our country's✌✌

Mike: I replaced it with the exact fuse specs that was found inside the transformer I do not see why it is not a good idea. any way, the device is up and running up to this minute and seems like all is well. have a blessed day.

Good Job Sir, but I have a question. This thermal fuse is intended to protect the transformer from overheat, and already do its job nicely. Do you make observation why the transformer become so HOT? When you don't observe and fix the real source of heat, I am sure it will happened angain in future.

Hadiprodjo: thank you. yes, you are right about the fuse. I usually test out the device before sending it back to the customer and it was up and running. according to the customer who picked up a while ago it is still up and running. have a blessed day
