21-inch CRT Toshiba Television hit by lightning restored back to life (Model 21S2M)
I received a phone call from one of my neighbor to check out his television. Within twenty minutes I was on site and he did a brief history of the problem. First he told me that the television has served him faithfully for the last 20 years and has never gone to a technician and love it so much because it was his first television to buy when he got employed 20 years ago.
According to him the problem started after a lightning struck around the area and therefore suspect it could be a lightning related case. With that small introduction on the problem I picked the television to my shop, applied the power and noted the television was coming up nicely. I pressed the menu key and menu came up nicely as you can see below
Next I connected the decoder and pressed the AV mode and this is what I saw:
The television is picking AV mode but no picture on the screen but audio was present and very clear. I opened the television and did intensive voltage testing and everything seemed okay.
I did all dry joints especially around the main I.C and AV connectors and thought that will solve the problem but after switching on the television the problem remained the same. I had a junk Toshiba board in my shop and I decided to directly change the memory I.C24C08 and again I was not lucky.
The reason I was not suspecting lighting related case is because I figured out that since the TV was connected via the decoder, and the Ariel (lightning entry point) connect to the decoder then the impact of the lightning should not go beyond the decoder.
So after doing all I could and realized the problem still remains I decided to replace the main I.C reluctantly just as a by the way and because the junk I had still had the exact main I.C used in this television.
I soldered out the main I.C slowly and carefully and did the same to the one on the junk and did the replacement.
After replacement, I decided to power the television but not expecting much since this television has really frustrated me.
The television came up nicely and I could hear the sound and turning to the screen this is what is saw:
The television video is now restored back as you can see above. I called the client to break the news and he was very happy to hear the success report.
Since I was busy in office I send my son to take it back, he delivered the television and never waited for the owner to test.I received a call from the customer and told he me, Humphrey! Seems like you are not able to repair my television because still am not getting the picture!
This surprised me since I had tested it in my office and worked well, I suspected his decoder could also have a problem and I requested him to test using DVD player. After connecting DVD player, the picture came up nicely and we concluded the problem is with the decoder and therefore need checking also.
I went there to collect it and told me the wife took it back to the dealers.

Good job! I guess that removing that shrink-DIP 8801 (Zilog uPC?) IC was the hardest part because they are more difficult to remove without damaging the mainboard or its copper tracks. Those Shrink-DIP type ICs were in the past also frequently used in Philips CTV's.

Sir,
Your done a excellent job.You got IC from junk board and replaced.Suppose we want to replace new IC, can we replace with out programming. My doubt may please be clarified in your reply. Thank you very much for sharing such a good article.

Hi Babu, I usually replace this main i.c from the junk, so I have never replaced with a new one to know how it will behave, but think there should be programming otherwise it will not work.

am abaho fron Nansana uganda i had the same proble of lightening but when i took it to the mechanics they changed the whole processor but failed to produce audio
