4GB Kingston USB Thumbdrive Repair

This Kingston 4GB USB Thumbdrive sent by my friend for me to repair had a complaint of he had accidentally stepped on it causing it to malfunction.

It was pretty easy to open the cover with the flat head screw driver. Remember, do not force open such cover because it can leave a bad mark on the cover.

After opening the cover the first thing I saw was three of the solder joints were detached (including the circuit line).

The connector had to be removed and throughoutly cleaned the circuit board using chemical. I purposely marked the circuit lines with number 1, 2 and 3 so that it would be easy for you to see.

Once done the marking, I carefully soldered a single thin wire to joint between the points that were broken. I had to solder three thin wires to complete the job.

When it was completed I tested the USB drive by inserting it to the CPU computer. It was working perfectly fine.

Now is the time to apply glue/gum onto the joints and the wiring as this way it can protect the wires from shorting to other components and the solder joints will not easy to detach.

Conclusion- Although the price for USB is cheap, I had to repair it because the information contain inside the drive is much much more expensive than the thumbdrive itself. My friend was happy and I’m glad to help a friend in need.

Vow! Such devices are too tiny for me to handle! But you have done a good deed to your friend! Will the glue used (probably Fevibond) create a problem in the future like it had done in many equipment!

Another common issue with usb drives is the 12Mhz crystal. It can go bad and the processor loses its clock and can't read memory. The crystal is cheap and easy to solder in so you can read the drive, back it up and then toss it.

Nice job Mr. Suranga! It is still unbelievable how fast and well these USB Memory sticks work, and have replaced our old Floppy Drives. I recently heard that it is one of the many Israeli Inventions that changed the world! Just like the 3D camera for Xbox360 and Xbox One, now known as Kinect.

Robert, you mean how fast those are also going to disappear in favor of the SSD and USB Flasing memory modules?

I still use those so that's why I didn't mention them. And of course the CD-Rom is an invention made by Philips in the Netherlands, and produced and distributed together with Sony Worldwide to escape their previous debacle called Video 2000. (That lost first from Betamax and secondly from VHS_Video Home System recorders). PS: did you know that it was Bing Crosby who helped producing the first VCR's called Ampex in the USA?

The CD replaced the floppy drive before memory sticks got here. I still use CD/DVD's also.
