I read it was a Dutch politician who changed the type of usb charging port in the EU to the standardised usb-c charging ports for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices. This way making an end to the many different charging ports and adapters that existed.
Even Apple needed to change their old adapters to comply to the new now standardized port. Apple's hand was forced by the European Union, which passed a law in 2022 requiring phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the region to come equipped with a USB-C port by the end of 2024.
