Albert: the Xbox or the PS4..etc if they sit a long time without being used, the thermal paste will eventually dires and need to be checked and dust will accumulate and make it even worse unless it is covered and kept in clean environment.
yes, I had the same problem with my Studio laptop which was overheating and the fan was kicking in like normal but for some reason the laptop was shutting down. when i opened it, the thermal paste was really dry and when replaced with fresh new paste, it is working like a charm. have a blessed day

Although I haven't played any games for at least about 4 years now, I know my Xboxes are still in great condition. It will be the battery packs for the wireless controllers that need new recharges now being not used for so long.
About refreshing the cooling paste and cleaning the processor top, it was needed on an older ASUS L8400 notebook that often failed to start or suddenly simply stopped working. It was not certain what was the cause at first. But after the multiboot made (XP, Knoppix and other OS versions) notebook was cleaned and the old dryed out paste was replaced it works again like a brandnew laptop. But the hot air was hardly noticeable at first finding the real cause.

Parasuraman: yes but still the thermal paste has to be replaced since it was dry otherwise the problem will happen again.
