About EEPROM Hex file

By on July 13, 2010

hexfile

Once in a while I will get question from ERG members about the hex file in EEprom IC “Sir do you know how to read and modify the hex file” if the EEprom data had corrupted”? My answer to them was no i do not know how to read the hex files. Since i can’t read the hex file thus i can’t change or modify the file. You may click on the photo to know about hex file. By the way, does anyone of you here know how to read the hex file? I would like to know how you could solve the EEPROM data that had corrupted if you do not have the original file for reprogramming.

    Hii jestine

There are a few variants of hex files out there. The most notable kind is intel hex format. You can
find the specs on the net.

    HI Jalal,

Whether you want to program or dump any memory file you need a programmer that is suitable to the EEPROM IC.

    Hi Jestin,
I am a regular reader of Your newsletters, congrats for it 🙂
So, to read/write the 24(L)Cxxx or 96(L)Cxxx series EEPROMs is easy by a PICKIT2 programmer (from Microchip). You can find the method in the readme file of it.
The EEPROMs above can hold the datas in Intel hex format.

    Hi Justin

Easiest way to fix a hex file you think is corrupt without hex knowledge is to buy chip reading software & cables to read chips/ic`s: X prog is not expensive and good. You can also download a hex editor to read data: HxD is good and easy to use.
You can then read a file from a good eeprom or ic and compare it with the data you think is corrupt,if they are not identical just copy and paste good data on to your corrupt file or just write good file on to your eeprom/ic.
    Regards
    Scott

      HI Scott,

Thanks for the comment. In fact I have been using Pony prog and the China made EEprom progammer for many years. I used to save the good data and overwirte on bad EEprom. Most of the time it works. The real problem is we can't find the original data to program on a suspected EEprom.

I bought one that they said is compatible with Win8, but found out that it's not. Now I can't use mine and their website and instructions are all in Chinese.

Nowadays most Manufacturers don't put their BIOS .hex or .bin code content easily downloadable on-line anymore. It is mostly now packed in Boot software to run and install on Working laptop's and/or Desktop's and can't be used to Flash a Bios chip with a programmer like the Genius G540 or 840 (Ebay). But also can't be used on a none working pc.
Therefore I add the remark that I do make a BIOS Backup of any working Laptop or Desktop pc when I get the chance. This way I not only know which Bios chip content works but I also have a copy when the Manufacturer doesn't share the content On-line.
And you even don't have to open your laptop or Desktop if you do not want to de-solder and re-solder the Chip back if you just want to copy the Bios Chip.
Because there's is a perfect software program for this namely: "Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit 2.0".
It helped me in most cases I wanted to quickly make a copy of the internal Bios Boot content from a laptop or whatever pc. But it has one little problem. And that is that you first must disable your Viruskiller to be able to use this great utility. Else it probably will not work or be put in quarantaine. But I guarantee you that it won't harm your pc. And after you have made your Backup Bios copy you just switch the Viruskiller on again afterwards.
(And I keep these kind of valuable programs packed to keep them from getting easily erased).
    Have a nice repair day!
    Cheers.
    Albert.

      Hi Eng,

Each of the eeprom files is unique and they are not the same. No one will keep all the files in the market. They just keep the file that they think is important.
