 high voltage probe

So what do you think about the high voltage probe-is it necessary in Monitor repair? Well for me i don’t like to guess what is wrong with the circuit, in fact i like to confirm indeed that the circuit have problem. Two days ago, my repair friend called me about a 15″ Monitor shut down problem. When i asked him at what voltage the high voltage shutdown even without the B+ fet in the circuit. He told me it was about 30 Kv. This immediately lead me to tell him to check the safety capacitor. I believe the capacitance have gone down very low value or may be totally open circuit. I have repaired quite a number of Monitor shutdown at over 30 kv was due to safety capacitor value out.

What if he didn’t have the high voltage probe? It is hard to guess at what voltage a Monitor shut down. It can shutdown at 12, 15, 18, 27 or even 30Kv. If you are serious in Monitor or TV repairing, i strongly suggest you to invest one as it really save up your time without guessing at which circuit have problem. If my repair friend told me that the Monitor shutdown at 15 Kv i will definetely lead him to other circuit and not the safety capacitor.

If the shutdown happen to a 17″ Monitor i would have ask him to check the flyback internal capacitor. An open flyback internal capacitor can cause high voltage to shoot up beyond 30 Kv and then shutdown. Today only i have a subscriber asked at where he can get a high voltage probe. He had made a good decision by getting one to include to his range of testing equipment in his workshop. Again this article talks about the speed in electronic repairing.

What happend if the anode voltage is half or below half. What circuit or component would you suspect?

    Thank You.

    Hi Julius,
Check the B+ Circuit and all components related to it such as the B+ FET, B+ coil, filter cap and current sense resistor. But of course you have to make sure all the secondary voltages are within the spec.
