ASUS PC Repaired

A co-worker asked for my help because his PC (ASUS P5LD2-VM) can’t be turned On. The cover of the cabinet was taken out, and the voltages (+5 volts) of PSON and Standby from the SMPS were checked on as well. Then the SMPS was turned On using a piece of wire between the PSON and a Ground connector, and it started perfectly fine.

The duty was a little harder from now on. First of all I followed the next steps in my procedure:

To unplugged the Power Switch connector from the System Power Connector of the Motherboard.
To short with the tip of a screwdriver the contacts of the Power Switch in the Motherboard (marked with the green arrow in the photo below).

Note: If you are not an expert in this kind of procedure you have only two options: to look for the paper format User Guide or digital format (provided with the CD which comes with every Motherboard). In the photo above the digital variant was used.

In the case of this PC, the system started with the jumper between Ground and PSON terminals, so the Motherboard was really fine. Now the only malfunction was in the Power Switch button. It was extracted from the cabinet and the Reset Switch button as well.

When the Power SW was tested with the Digital Multimeter it had no continuity when you pressed it, so the solution done was to interchange the connection between Power Switch button and the Reset Switch button in the Motherboard.

Both buttons were re-connected in the cabinet and when the Reset switch was pressed look at the result in the photos below:

Note: Many times is very hard to get a new switch button to substitute the broken one. You would have to buy a new cabinet (which not worth the investment) Therefore we usually use the Reset Switch button as replacement. Mission accomplished.

Hi Humberto, another repair done, that is mostly old school to us over skilled Engineers. I take it that also in your country Windows XP isn't safe to use for Banking Transactions over the Internet anymore. Today the new Internet Explorers or Browsers are so changed to their now protected rather closed versions that older Booting CD or DVD sadly simply don't work anymore.
But I still have a weak spot for this Good old and never failing Windows version. But now only on older standalone Desktops or Laptops.

  Hi Mr. Albert, you are right, but remember in my country there are a great deal of OLD FASHIONED PCs, and then they have to be installed with Win XP, and on the other hand, Internet is very hard to get in my country, very expensive, and now it is beginning the people to have Internet. It was forbiden for the whole life. Regarding Transactions, do not worry, we do not have any privilege in have MasterCard, Pay Pal, and.... It's a pity

I often try some silicone oil to try and bring the switch back
