Thanks Paris for sharing this great project with us.
One of my life dreams is to convert a PC PSU to an LA bat charger for my car. I've seen a lot of resources on the web and I found your article among the best ones.
However your design lacks an automatic main to switch from charging to floating mode.
If you can email me I'll suggest you a simple circuit for this purpose using a simple LM358 op amp. Theoretically (on the paper) it works bur practically I don't know, so I want you to give it a try please.

Hi Paris, sorry that I didn't reply earlier. I just saw your question only today after answering on another reply of yours. I am confused which article it was because switching through all of them takes some time on my small laptop. But I see this is a request from 25 April so it is already from some days before.

I already repaired one P.F.C. PSU after your very useful 5V standby tip on the TNY277. And the FAN4800 I didn't need to check further because now my Supply finally works thanks to you! I've just today send in the Repair article to Jestine.

And I gladly would like to return the favor if I can help with your old Tektronix Scope. I am not sure if I can help you enough but hope I can because you are probably much better in these special topics than I am.

I am fine with exchanging our email addresses through Jestine. So please let me know how you think I can provide any help, dear Paris.

Your words, thanks a lot about them, make me once again realize that I cannot escape this legacy which dominates the way I think. But I like that as it is. I paid a lot because of this my life, but no regrets. No need to escape…

Please excuse me, but I didn’t understand completely your writings. I understood that you have a defective PSU for a computer, which you want to repair it, this is clear, but I am confused with the chips you refer to. Which one is installed in your PSU? Give me an answer on this and I will help you. I have experience only with the FAN 4803 of that 48XX family, but this means nothing. Experience on a specific IC is not that important. You can ask my email from Jestine and we can discuss this topic in further detail and at our own pace. I also need your experience on an issue with an old portable Tektronix scope I bought for a very good price, but….a lot of problems in this tiny oscilloscope my dear. I feel I lost the money I spent on it…Come in contact with me…

Thanks Paris. I checked the last PWM PSU controller chips I bought.
They were: Fairchild FAN4800CNY 4800 IC PFC CONTROLLER CCM/DCM
16DIP and a TNY277PN TNY277 Integrated Circuit DIP-7. Sadly
replacing them both in the defect SMPS didn't work. So there must
be another reason why the peticular Power Supply won't start. It
must be the fact that these PFC driven circuits are indeed more
difficult to fix? And the only cheap and very good SMPS units we
can buy on-line are the ones that came from Israel. See this old
