how to fix and repair digital multimeter

While working on equipment by mistake I have measured DC 320v on main filter capacitor while my range selector of multimeter was on Diode testing mode.

digital multimeter repair

Screen of the meter flickered and I come to know that I have did something wrong. While checked the position of selection knob I realize what I did I have measured the Dc voltage on Ohm Range and spoiled the meter for confirm I have short two probes of meter for continuity there is no movement of digits on the screen so for confirmation of other section I have tested AC and Dc voltages both are worked well. So concluded the problem is with resistance range only. (I had made this mistake before also with my analog Meter Checked 320V DC while selection knob was on ohm range and was damaged since then I kept analog meter beside and brought this Digital Meter.)

Now no choice beside to get new Meter, so I have kept the equipment as it is and phoned to my parts vendor but he was not picking up the phone I was helpless because that day is Thursday and shops in that area remain weekly closed.

So I have decided to open and at least see in side if I can do something. So I have opened the meter for visual inspection. Selector strips all are Ok no burn marks and all the parts are look ok.

how to repair digital multimeter

For reconfirming the inspection I took my magnifier glass and started re checking the unit I found one resistor Marked R16 looks doubtful under the magnifier glass.

how to fix digital multimeter

Marking on the resistor is not readable so I have googled and found this resistor is of 1.3kΩ I am not having this value of resistor with me in my parts box I have decide to try with some nearby value I have arranged 1K ¼ watt resistor.

Removed this SMD resistor and soldered this carbon film resistor on its place

Now it’s time to test the multimeter ……………….

how to repair and fix multimeter

Test on diode range by shorting two probes I got the continuity & Beep……………………….resistance testing also done.

fixing multimeter

Tested 27Ω Resistor reads perfect. So now it is time to get back to the work!!!!!!

Mine did the same but mine neither resistance nor dc volt worked the same it was 230ohm changed with no luck i think the chip is gone and i cant check caps and other stuff without a multimeter so i purchased a new 1 its my 3rd one

I too have damaged many DMM and Analogue meters that same way. I would fling them out and just buy another. Cheap one to replace just in case I make the same mistake again. If it is cheap it won't bother me so much but if it is an expensive meter I'll scream really loud and ase swear words.

      Andrew,
Next time Just have a look into the bad equipment before fling them, may be it is of 10 minutes Job to revive the equipment.

Very good, Yogesh, thanks for sharing your experience. However, the function of the resistor in the circuit was not stated. And it´s interesting that, in a good precision multimeter like this, a difference in the resistor values (1 kohm - 1.3 kohm) did not affected the measuring precision.

Good job Yogesh. I like to take devices apart and take photos in case I need to know what a part number in the future. You are lucky that the MC wasn't damaged. You do not save old boards to salvage SMD and other components from?

      Sir,

I made habit to first take the photo of whole circuit with wiring location and than i start the inspection. This machine is look like new from inside though using this since last 5 years .I periodically clean the tools.for salvage the SMD i have few junk boards with me but i did not found nearby value of resistor.

    Hey Yogesh,

Thanks for your article. I have a multimeter that I accidentally fried years ago when testing a microwave oven. Apparently it didn't like the 4,000 Volts I put through it!
Did you find a wiring diagram for your multimeter? If so, where? I would like to get mine running again, but would feel more confident using a wiring diagram.
    Cheers

Some times You have to make do with what you have and if that means repairing something the that's OK.
Glad it worked out for you, not good being without one meter.

Connection strips in my meter, but this morning I saw 6 strips on some ones ons meter on u tube .it confused me whether I lost one of them in my meter when I first time opened it.Or my meter is different version.Any way I will first atten R16..
