Capacitor Replacement

Now, whenever you  could not find the exact voltage of the capacitor from electronic shops, you can always use a higher than the original rated voltage of capacitor for replacement. The best suggestion that i can give you is to use a next voltage level. For example, the capacitor rated voltage ranges that can be found in the market are 6.3v, 10v, 16 v, 25 v, 35v, 50v, 63v, 100, 160, 200v, 250v, 350v, 400v, 450v and etc. If you want to find replacement for the 25volt range cap then use the 35 volt. Of course you can use 50 or even 100volt but do you know that the higher the voltage of the cap, the higher the price? The capacitor price is not base on the capacitance value!

Well, you can use the 160v or even 250 volt range but it is not practical. The price is expensive and there will be no room/space for you to insert the cap. You may have to modify and use longer wires to fit in the big cap and this will look ugly. Generally the higher the cap voltage, the bigger is the capacitor size. Sometimes it depends on the manufacturers too. I came across capacitor that was rated 50 volt that have smaller size than a 25 volt cap!

Actually finding cap for replacement is not an issue, if the replacement cap can fit well into the original place then your job is considered done. This post is not for only electrolytic capacitors, it can be used for the non polar caps as well.

    HI Big,

Is the first monitor output voltages from the SMPS stable? For the second and third monitor, you may need to check the filter cap (bulged) and also the back lamp. A bad backlight could cause it to shutdown.

Yes on the first monitor voltage is stable,in second and third capacitors is good and backlights is good, but no voltage from backligt output connector, but if i disconnect inventer board from second monitor sound from transformator not exist.on third monitor the buttons not work just light work.

    HI Big,

Green led blinking with stable voltage could be a sign of CPU failure. Make sure the h/v signal is connected and are reaching the cpu. Make sure also the cpu is receiving stable 5 volt.

for the second and third monitor, is there supply voltage to the inverter ic when the monitor is not working?

hi mr Yong,on belinea i tried to change all component and it not solved the problem,i think problem is in a mcu or some smd components,
i change the smps board and it works fine, now about samsung 923bf,i test it without metal case and it works fine, after that i back it in metal case without a one central plastic screw and it works fine, but on a third monitor porblem still exist,14 volt is not stable ,i tried to test diodes after transformer and it show 33 volts, after that diodes is two capacitors and a connector for mainboard, on first two monitor problem is litle confused but on third...

    Hi Big,

Okay the first two monitors already solved. But on the third one is the output voltages not stable. Only one output not stable or all of the output?

Hi mr Yong .Output on connector for mainboard is not stable,14 voltage is not stable, other voltages is stable , but sound from monitor is like a arcing and turn of the lamps, after that sound disapear

    mr. yong,

I have come accross a power supply section of a dvd player with a large voltage capacitor that has a glue-like yellowish color beside it. is it an indication that the capacitor is leaking? or it is really a glue. Only one capacitor have a glue-like on it. other capacitor sorrounding it doesnt have it. my dvd will sometimes hang up during long hours of operation. please advice. thank you.

    HI Big,

If the 14 volt is not stable then you should concentrate on this line. It could be a bad cap or bad output diode. Sometimes bad components in the 14 volt line in the motherboard could cause such problem.

    Hi Jomar,

Those are silicone glue to secure the capacitor from vibration during shipping and etc. Make sure all output voltages from the SMPS are good and stable.

    HI Big,

Well, it can be components that breakdown when under load. It can be in the primary or in the secondary side. Start to replace the semiconductor and retest the set. If you have the freezer/coolant then it will be really helpful.

    Hi jestine,

I face a problem in a 12v 80w ac adapter output filter capacitor, it got 3 pcs 1000uF, 680uF, 330uF 25v 105c brand samxon. After 1 year starting bulge, output voltage drop under load. I replace it with panasonic cap with same value, voltage & temperature rating, it work around 1 year & starting bulge again, some of it primary filter capacitor 68uF 450v 105c samxon also starting fail with no value & cause the primary side multiple component fail(PWM, resistor, zener diode, circuit track burn). Firstly i suspect the temperature ac adapter too high cause it cap bulged, after i measure the adapter internal temperature in a room without fan & air-con the maximun temperature reach 68c, but the cap temperature 105c it should be ok. 2nd i suspect the cap quality problem but even i chance it with panasonic brand also cant last longer. In ur experience what do you suspect & what should i do to prevent this capacitor fail again?

    Thank you.

    HI Kim hock,

Try use another brand with slightly higher voltage. For example, use 35 volt cap instead of 25 volt.

    hi jestine,

i am regular reader fo your monthly newsletters, i would like to know, can i suggest high voltage caps for low voltage caps, if i am suggesting a cross for caps, for example can i suggest 35 volts cap in place of 25 v, which is already being used in teh board? will it affect the application or functionality?

    HI Manjunath,

You need to replace cap that have higher voltage otherwise the cap my blow if you replace it with lower than original value.

      Hi Rex,

The rule is to replace with the same or higher microfarad. If you put in a lower cap value, it may still run but not for long.

      Hi Donald,

Did you replace with the same spec and type of cap? Overvoltage can kill a cap so you need to check if the voltage across the cap is according to the spec or not.
