Changing Backlight Of Thompson UHD LED TV 102cm And Panel Breaking Case Of SONY KDL-40W600B
- Changing backlight of Thomson LED TV: As mentioned by me in other articles, I keep visiting my techie friend, who is also an expert in bonding services, located around 20 KMs from my home. During one of my visits, he asked for my help to fix a backlight issue in this TV. I opened the TV, and checked the voltages for the LED Drive and noticed that it was coming to around 105V and dropping, without any effect on the backlight. Evidently, the backlight was not working. Since current drawn is sensed by the LED Driver IC, it goes to protection mode, when there is no load.
I removed the LVDS cable, then slowly released the scalar boards from the holding double side tapes at the bottom, unscrewed the front frames holding the panel and turned the TV topsy-turvy to remove the frame. Looked for any pasting of the panel onto the frame by slightly lifting the sides using a visiting card. We have to be extremely careful in handling the edges of the panel, as they are very brittle. After ensuring that there were no hold ups, my friend came and removed the panel and transferred it to a thermocol sheet.
I continued my work and removed the panel holding base frame by prying it out from its locks all-around. Then removed the top diffuser sheets and the reflector sheet. The reflector sheet was having fixing screws on this plastic cabinet, which was easy to remove, unlike the backlights stuck onto metal cabinets. Since I have already covered step-by-step detailing of such work in other similar articles, I am not repeating these by adding pictures. My friend clicked this picture when I was doing the work of fixing the new backlights:
You might notice that the backlights were getting fixed on the reflector. It was a suggestion by my friend to place the LEDs in the same place like before. He did so as the cabinet was plastic and it did not make a difference.
After fixing the backlight properly and testing, I re-fixed all the sheets and panel holding frame and my friend came again to put the panel back on to the front, after counter checking whether the base was properly seated and was perfectly levelled, without which the panel might crack when we fix the front holding frame. After screwing back the side frames and re-inserting the LVDS cable, the TV was found working functionally well, with a few lines on the screen. My friend said that he would handle that problem and asked me to leave as it was already as late as 8.30PM, that too on a Sunday! Here is a concluding picture of this work:
- Panel breaking case of Sony LED TV: I request the readers to read the article written about this TV before, to know the background of this TV, without which this report might not be a news: Backlight Replacement In Sony Bravia LED TV MODEL W60B | Electronics Repair And Technology News (jestineyong.com)
I have one more reason for referring you all back to the previous article, as I could not provide correct model number of the TV at that time. The correct model number was KDL-40W600B and not W60B as wrongly mentioned then. Here it is:
In that article, I had mentioned that the panel had got strained due to mishandling by the customer. I had warned him not to press the panel hard again, as it was likely to develop further cracks. But, customers, as you might all know already, seldom pay attention to what we say or remember our advice. He told me that this TV became dead and was kept aside as he had another TV. But that also became defective one day, upon which he brought both these to me. When I switched on this TV, it was getting on contrary to the complaint about it. But, alas, the panel was found cracked! So, crack has developed due to further mishandling of this TV, while removing or transporting.
Lessons learnt: (1) Never ever press the panel hard while handling it. (2) The TV might still work!
As the customer did not want the TV back, I advertised in my whatsup group for disposing the boards along with the original remote and power supply adaptor. Got offers and finalized one deal with the highest bidder.
Though the bidder is yet to come and pick up the TV, I am concluding this article with this report, allowing the satisfactions to get added to the collections. Why am I having satisfaction on a TV, in which the panel broke? Because, I found a buyer and I could adjust the cost of repair of another TV of the customer with this sale! So, triple benefits (1) Customer is happy (2) I am happy that I need not have to carry this in my junk (3) Buyer of the TV is happy that he could get a spare power supply, remote and boards along with a tcon/scalar board for future salvaging! So, do you all agree that I am right? (LOL)
Goodbye until the next!

I agree that you have done a good but always risky backlight repair job again. These jobs are way too cumbersome for my taste, why I avoid doing these as much as possible. In which I am very successful up to now! (Lol)
