blood pressure monitor repair8

I have a blood pressure monitor (B.P.M) with the brand name of Beurer.  I use it to check my blood pressure. Due to the busy schedule (last year) I have forgotten to use the device until my wife reminded me to use it.

The moment I pressed on the power button, the display would appear and then shutdown (totally blank in the LCD display).

Once the batteries cover was opened I saw the batteries already leaked. The leakage did affect the circuit line/track as seen from the photo below.

I had to open up the cover and check for any broken circuit line. I found one of the circuit tracks was broken and had to clean the area with Thinner before using a wire to make the connection.

Once done I tested it and no more shutting down. I applied some hot glue on the wire and closed back the cover.

This is how the internal part look like:

I turned the set On and checked on my blood pressure. Below is the result that I got. What do you think about the result?

The price of this tester is about USD100+. With a simple repair work, this device was brought back to life.

You are right Robert, the batteries of all our equipments and devices should be checked on every certain time. I've seemed this bad situation in many remote controls of TV sets, DVD players, etc.

Nice article... I had some battery leakage and it completely dissolved the battery terminals and the circuit trace. I had to do a lot of surgery work. But keep up the good work.

Any electronics equip using batteries, when not in use for long period of time, batteries should be removed from the equipt to avoid possible baterry leak

    Sir,
Best way to extend the life of rechargeable battery used in this type of equipment is to "Remove the battery from equipment when not in use" and Batteries are best stored in a cool, dry place at normal room temperature, open air shelf or drawer . I have nice pair of battery which i am using with my Camera since last five Years without any problem. thanks for sharing your experience.

Yes leaking batteries are a plague.
    I have noticed some consistency:
Duracell & all other Eveready batteries show relatively high incidence of leaking.
Most Chinese brands (often you see them only once) display good life & are relatively free from leakage problems.
    This has been my observation.
I no longer consider any Eveready/Duracell battery.
Ridiculous to suggest that batteries should be removed between use (though that is the only safe procedure). Nobody can do that with the multiplicity of battery powered gadgets around home & workshop.
Suppliers - WAKE UP this is 2015 not 1955 - improve your technology.
Finally always claim damages from the battery manufacturer; I have had several repairs paid for, & it lets the bstds know we are on to them.

I use nothing but Duracell's, except for rechargeable batteries, and I have only had 2 that leaked: 1 was in a D cell that was in a flashlight. When you have to worry about batteries leaking mostly is when they are nearly dead.
After reading this article, I went ahead and removed the batteries( all Duracell btw) from equipment that I rarely use - like a Transistor/Diode tester that I built that came in a kit. And none of them were leaking although a couple were getting low on voltage.
But nothing is perfect except God, so we need to check our batteries regularly. The sooner you catch a leaking battery, the better.

I have an ibp A40 blood pressure monitor.. it starts fine and pumps in air and the inflates and then starts inflating and I can hear the bleed valve clicking until the deflates until 20 or 15 and then gives EE error... the thing is.. it shows the pressure of air being pumped in the cuff but it does not sense the heart rate or blood pressure and during deflation it keeps on looking until the pressure becomes zero.. do you know what's wrong with this monitor? There are no leaks..

      Hi Usman,

I have not came across this problem before and without hands on assessment it is hard for me to tell what would be the actual faulty component. This means you may need to open up the device and start to check and troubleshoot. Electronics failure can be caused by open circuit track, loose cable connection, bad or dirty sensors, faulty components or even corrupted memory ICs.
