Yes they were used for multi cylinder automotive engines pre CDI as the gauge only goes to 30 Kilovolts. You need to connect the positive (red) lead to the ignition coil and the negative lead to the other side and the test probe you would touch the exposed connection on the lead to the distributor and crank the engine over to obtain a reading. Any reading over 15 Kilovolts is Ok.
You could also touch each of the spark plug ends while engine running to compare the Kilovolts required to fire each cylinders mixture as well as diagnosing a coil lead problem for that cylinder.

HI Sean,

Thanks and did you use it to test on coils in flyback, transformer and yoke coils? Is it accurate?

Hello,

I have this meter! It is for testing how good the ignition coil is. It is part of a kit for testing pre electronic car ignition. Kit includes dwell meter and timing strobe. I have lost the instructions on how to use it.

ok this test the voltages of coil under operation and indicate that
best voltage is between 20up to 30 in green zone this must be specialized for special coil with specific voltages should not be
car because car working with 12 volts but bigger cars have bigger working voltages or may be is good for some sort of electronics
in navy or military

HI JESTINE

this is not meger or insulation tester this is like dc volt meter why?:
1- one of the prob is red that must connect to + side of coil
2- another one is black must be connect to - negative side
3- also i can see on the range of meter 5 10 15 and from 20 up to 30
indicated that is green and good voltage
this must be voltmeter
thanx
