A friend showed me a cheap bought Android Tablet that was defect and asked me to see if it could be fixed. It was completely dead and the battery probably was completely discharged. Although I was not sure I could help him I took it home with me to have a closer look.

Opening these Tablets can be a bit tricky but to my surprise there were only 4 screws on the outside of the case. I removed those screws and continued by first opening the larger aluminium back cover with my Sanhooii tools. That was the hardest part because it was firmly clipped into the Lcd top panel. I then was able to also remove the smaller black plastic cover that was still attached with two other screws that was only visible after removing the larger grey aluminium cover.

The black cover housed the back side camera and the in- and output jacks. (in above photo on the left). And it looked like someone already had tried to open the device without being able to repair it. The battery indeed was completely drained (0V) and I noticed that the 5V DC input jack was blocked inside by what looked like the remains of a broken of plug. And the connector now was only loosely connected to the solder of its copper tracks. So even if I could plug in another fitting 5V adapter it still would make no difference because there was no DC input to the board.

I couldn’t connect my 5V adapter into the blocked input jack so I removed it for further inspection. Next photos show the still damaged input chassis jack before and after removal. The 5V jack had 4 solder connections. Two for +5V and ground and the other two to help holding it mechanically in place on the board when it’s plugged in.

Previous photo showed the remains of the removed parts that blocked the 5V input entry. Next photo shows the outside case that only has 4 screws. And following photos show my Sanhooii tools. And the tool that perfectly helped me to remove the Aluminium grey cover.

Previous photo shows the model of this Tablet on the Aluminium grey cover. Followed by a photo of the position on the board of the defect 5V DC input jack. After the input jack was soldered firmly

back onto the board the screen immediately showed the battery was charging fine again. Next photos show the result.

The battery charging animation presented itself followed by the Android boot symbol, the Android animation and the Delium opening screen.

And the Battery charging screens show that all is well!

I helped a friend which only took me some time. And I probably repeat myself by saying, it again didn’t cost me much to also fix his device. Only some solder and electricity. Of course not counting the money already spend on equipment, education and practical training. Success is all that counts and our everlasting goal!

Thanks Beh, I hope that the owner is able to find a matching working 5V 2.5A DC power adapter because that plug is extremely thin. And he also has to find the unlock password for the Android system too because the codes he thought were right didn't work when tried.

Hi Paul. We learn many things every day even after decades of fixing and learning new tricks in the trade. I learned a new thing myself just before yesterday on how to read PAL 16L8 chips on a defect Wangtek ISA slot PC driver board. If you Google for PALdumper you'll find the schematics on how to make the adapter and use it on a TL866 universal programmer. (;)
Or Google on CharlesMacDonald the Genius behind the PALdumper. And if new larger Eproms are added to the list of my new 48 pins RT809H universal programmer with at least 22 Addresslines (A0 to A21) I will be able to make a PALdumper to also read PAL20L10 chips. As you must know that PAL programmers are beside very expansive also obsolete now and replaced by modern GAL programmers. Why this PALdumper adapter is great to add to our equipment!

Good job, Albert. A couple of the photos are kinda blurry. The tablets that I see have the USB micro-B charge port.

The blurry side photo of the Android Tablet I took while holding my camera with my other hand which explains its unsharpness. I will try to do better next time Robert. The Tablets that like you say do have the USB micro-B charge port have one major problem: not being able to charge the device when the port is used for external ON-TO-GO USB connected devices. This tablet luckily still has a separate charging port. A problem of advancing technology design that I think makes using new Tablets problematic. For instance using my own newer Android 6.0 Tablet with only the charging ON-THE-GO USB connected to a Labnation Smartscope simply doesn't seem to work because of the lousy ON-THE-GO design.

Most devices, here in the USA at least, have ports for the micro-B so it isn't that big of a deal. The main problem is that the micro-B is easier to damage.

The micro-B USB port is not the problem Robert. It is the new ON-THE-GO USB connection that completely drains my Tablet when I connect devices like my Smartscope on that USB port while not being able to charge my Tablet at the same time. Thus making use of these Tablets is very limited time wise! Because the Battery is empty in minutes because not being able to connect the adapter to charge it in the meanwhile! Its just another stupid invention to save a dollar!

The part that I always fear the most is the mechanical part of any repair. In this case opening the severly closed aluminium outside shell from the top. Luckily with the curved hook-like tool, opening the clipped case was extremely easy.

Thanks Yogesh. Soldering in repairs as these like you will know is always the easiest part. Removing the broken remains in the blocked powerjack and opening the case took me more time.

Hi Justice. No worries because despite what you may think the knowledge you need on Android repair to fix a Tablet is not that hard. I am sure you are able to manage fixing a 5V power jack if your soldering skills are good enough. Obtaining another matching replacement 5V 2.5 Amps power adapter will be much harder to find if the previous owner had it thrown away.

Thank you! Fixing all those bad 5V DC input jacks will hopefully save a lot of Tablets from dumping perfectly good Lithium battery packs with them.
