Good Morning,

I got this Denon AVR which could not power up recently.  With a hope to apply my troubleshooting techniques learnt from Mr. Jestine’s class,

  1. I opened up the unit and found that the SMPS board was mounted vertically on the left side. Had a look at the accessible areas of the various boards and found that they are clean without any visible burnt marks, bulging caps etc.

  1. Without removing the whole SMPS board, I managed to remove and checked only the 2-fuses on the board. It was found that one (T1.6A 250V) of the fuses had been blown. Since I got a spare fuse, replaced the fuse and switched ON the power. Oops! The same fuse was blown again.
  2. To extend the troubleshooting further, I removed the SMPS board and conducted visual check on the components first. Found that a switcher IC (which could not seen initially due to vertical position of board) TOP258MG was burnt as well. Also, checked all other components one by one and found that 2-diodes (IN 4007) were faulty. Rest of the components were in order

  1. Replaced all 6 diodes including the 2-faulty ones, the burnt IC and the blown fuse with the new ones. Removal of IC was a bit challenging as there were a few SMD components nearby. Used Kapton tape to protect those SMD components and replaced the IC safely.

  1. Connected the power supply to the SMPS board alone. Checked the voltage at main filter cap using DMM and found that voltage was in normal range. Good to see that the fuse was not blown any more.

  1. Connected the SMPS board back into the AVR. Switched ON the power. Great that the power was back.

7.Next step, Checked the video and audio circuitries by connecting it TV and speakers and found               all were in order.

Wow!!!. The Denon AVR2311 is working flawlessly. I am so happy that I am able to apply my learning on SMPS repairs from Mr. Jestine’s class.

Thanks much Mr Jestine. You are The Great Guru.

Great job in getting the amplifier up a d running again. Great. You will no doubt become better at this. In the future, when you find a bad fuse, you should always check for shorts before Installing the replacement.

Good job in fixing the Denon unit! Although you used the maybe the fuse was bad trick first instead of a light bulb in serie (LOL).

    Raj, Good Job!
For safer side always use series bulb limiter for this type of fault finding & repair.

    Hi

I have DENON AVR 1311 Red light blinks when switching on the amplifier and after 3 attempts it will go green and start working.

    Hi Raj,

Thank you so much for the article. I am based in South Africa and my AVR is experiencing the same problem and we do not have parts suppliers this side. I need the IC. Do you know where I can order this part for my AVR?

Your assistance will be higly appreciated

Sorry for late reply.. Tied up with Covid measures at office. You mean IC: TOP258MG? I bought it locally in Singapore. You shall try at aliexpress.

    Hi Raj,
I have same issue on AVR-2311. My case is zener diode MTZJ22B were broken instead. But I can find same device in Singapore. Do you have any idea how to find these devices? I couldn't find it in Sim Lim.

    hi.
My Denon 2311 actually has an issue with the POWER. Searching the net, I came across this!!!
We discovered that Large Capacitor is blown, exploded!! Maybe the IC next to that, some other neighboring Diodes etc too..
What Model / Capacity is that Capacitor, does that have a name, number?
Is that costly? As well as that IC - Top258MG?
    Thanks again!
    Warm regards,
    George

I am glad to have read your article. I just took possession of a Marantz SR5005 receiver with the same board, same power problem. The 1.6A fused on 1st attempt. I noted that the SMPS Board was not clean. Some staining. Took out most diodes and Zener diodes and found some IN4007 faulty just like you described. Cleaned up the board, got most parts online, arrived but the TOP256 came as a PG version (7 pin), my error. Now, I wasn't so sure if the TOP258MG can be reused cos it looked ok. What is your opinion? Tqvm for your advice.
