A customer brought this drilling machine for repair and explained the issue to me. He said if he wiggles the power cord, the machine would work but he starts to see sparks then the machine goes into shut down.

The customer put an electrical tape around the cord and according to the customer it worked for awhile then the problem started.

I think it is a power cord issue but let us find out for sure.

There were three screws holding the black cover piece and once these were out I was able to see where the two wires meet with the power switch.

As seen, very dusty areas near the power switch but I will clean that area later one once the repair was done.

I connected the drill to my current limiter and powered on the drill machine and right away I could see smoke coming out from power cord area but not near the power switch.

Once the defective area was found, it was time to trim it out and connect the good part directly to the power switch.

broken cable

This is the defective part of the power cord and after cutting it off.

The defective part of the power cord was the brown wire and you could see burnt marks on that.

fixing cable

Before connecting the power cord to the power switch I decided to add these metal shields for better stronger joints.

I added and pressed the metal shield parts on the two wires, connected both of them to the power switch and fired up the machine; it worked like a charm. I put everything back together and called the customer for pick up.

Mission Accomplished.

I once got a refurbished power drill that would now and again stop working; turned out one of the carbon bushes was not running easy in its carrier. A little sanding and some silicone oil and it's been fine ever since; guess that is why it we returned in the first place.

Wait... wouldn't lubricating the brushes with grease cause the brushes to lose contact with the commutator? Or cause carbon buildup?

Tayo: I totally agree with you, lubricating the brushes with grease not needed in such machines. the only part needed lubrication is the motor itself but only a one dot of oil, nothing more. have a blessed day

Anwar:I do not think silicone oil was needed to crease the bushes, sanding alone would have done the job on its own. any way, thanks for sharing and have a blessed day

    Waleed,
Good article, and I especially liked the addition of the metal shields. I had never seen or heard of them before. I will look for some on ebay.
I always enjoy reading your articles, and those of Parasuraman. They always deal with do n to earth type problems. Keep up the good work.

I am adding this footnote, because I believe that things are soon to reach a fever pitch worldwide, and I want everyone to get right with God before the end comes. Please accept it in the admonition with which it is given. Thank you, and I admonish you to believe in Jesus Christ, that he is the only begotten son of God, and call upon him to receive salvation, and you shall be saved, and all of your household.

Good repair Waleed. Although it hardly requires your excellent knowledge in electronics, and neither really is about electronics either.
