My friend calls me to come to his house yesterday. He doesn’t explain why, I just came as a friend. I arrived at his house and asked him what happened. He explained that his DVD just dead and he could smell that is something burnt from DVD. I try to turn it on, but no signs of life. From my deduction, there is something burnt or shorted on this DVD power supply which prevented it to turn on. DVD’s brand is CRYSTAL and no model number was found.

dvd repair

I took this to my home because I don’t take my equipments with me. After I took the cover off, sure enough I can see main capacitor bulged slightly and the glue has a brown color. This glue always make power supply failed because it can cause shorted between the component leg.

Make sure to clean this glue when you repair electronics equipment. You can see the capacitor’s leg corroded too and we have to change it. I test the fuse, the result is no continuity and it looks like there is heavy shorted in primary side.

 dvd repairs

I test main capacitor with my homemade ESR Meter and the needle didn’t show any deflection. The ESR value is gone high and when I test this with continuity mode with my analog multimeter, the needle move to 0 ohms and didn’t move back because good capacitor will make the needle of the meter move to 0 ohms and moving back to infinity.

One of bridge diodes also shorted, I just change all of bridge diodes from Mr. Jestine Yong advice on his one of article. The coil for EMI filter looks burnt too, I make sure this with my Ring tester and it was shorted.

 dvd repairings

It took several minutes to analyze all of primary side components and found the components in the below picture were faulty.

 dvd repaired

You can see the fuse is bad and two capacitors was cover with some glue that causes it to short, these mylar capacitor beside IC still has a good capacitance value but I just change it for safety. As soon as I know the culprits, I search my components storage to change it. After all of my effort I ready to test it, for the first time I attach bulb light to prevent something bad happen if I miss components which are still bad.

 dvdrepair

The bulb didn’t lit and this proves all of components work good. You can see from led indicator shown “hold” and I can play it with several DVD cassettes. I clean the lens and lubricate disc tray to make sure no further problem.

 dvdrepairs

I am very happy to see the smile on my friend face when I send it back to his home. Thanks God to keep me safe doing electronics repair. Please be careful when doing this work because it is really dangerous around main capacitor, always use safety goggles and isolation transformer. Thank you.

Brilliant. I am currently repairing a dvd player. just waiting on some parts to arrive. Its nice to see that people still fix these things as the usual course of action is to bin it and buy a cheap replacement from the local supermarket.

I don't bin anything except maybe some cases. I keep every board and component I touch if the components are tested good.

      Hi Venu,
Where is the fun in that? Not everybody works on them for a living. I'm a hobbyist and fix them for the fun of it & to have something positive to do with my time since I'm disabled.
Also, when people fix devices & send in an article, we all get to enjoy reading and learning from it - that's why we are here! And Rudi also says that he is a hobbyist as I am.

You are welcome. I one hundred percent agreed with robert. I am not doing this for a living. I can just replace all the set as a new set just about 2 dollars. But robert already answer it, we have fun to repair, not just about replace full set. The disadvantage about new set power suply is we can choose the exact size for we needed. They just sell two types and size. You can just repalce it if you want to save the time as electronics repair professional. That is fine.

    Hello Rudi,
    good info by the way.
I have a question for you.
Is there another method to test coils beside Ring tester?

Thanks a lot and keep going!

As far as I know, the inductance value will change if the coil is bad. Bear in mind, not always, I have ever found one still have good inductance value. You can ask mr jestine for more advance advice.

I buy the emi filter in my town. Yes, they sell it, but for viper22a ic, nobody sell it. I have to buy one set dvd power supply if the ic failed, cheap and around 2 dollars. You can see the article about the add on for esr meter that i made. The esr meter based on Allan Willcox design. Very accurate and non linier, so i can see 0.1 ohms difference very clear. Thank you.

Nice article. I've seen a lot of brown glue(sometimes it even gets so dark it looks like black) on capacitors in SMPS for PC especially on their top and bottom but the capacitors are not always dead. I wonder why would anybody put a conductive glue on such items? Maybe just the glue is getting conductive with time? Or is it a trick for programmed/intentional aging - you know to make them go bad after some years of use so you buy a new one?

      Hi Momchil,

They put the glue on to help protect the components from vibrating loose during shipping.
