You are right!Sponge will protect the mic from the dust as well reduce air noise.

Albert: I never heard that before and I have plenty of these smaller sized mic’s in stock for at least two years now and I always install them on phones and I never had a complaint about them. Have a blessed day

I have done a similar repair.
I always place a thin layer of sponge over the microphone to reduce air noise.

I can't speak from experience but that is what I have read somewhere recently after examining some FM micro-spy circuits.
