I think the person who tried to repair it first must have gotten confused because of the conformal coating on the PCB—I had some doubts about it initially too. But then I thought, what’s the harm in trying? If it works, I get paid; if not, I get to learn something new.

I am not exactly sure why the resistor failed, as there were no burn marks on it. It might have broken down due to gradual degradation, or perhaps it was damaged by whoever attempted to repair it previously.

Nice article with good fix and well explained!
Although someone maybe already tried to repair these soap dispensers they luckily didn't make it worse. In case the pcb still needs to be water/moisture protected with a layer coating afterwards we easily can spray a thin layer with a cheap available transparant plastic spray can. Those spray cans only cost about less than 3 euro here.
When these cans are completely empty I always carefully open them afterwards and I remove the round metal balls that are still inside them that were used to stir the inside mixture with.

Vow! Very professional, step by step trouble shooting with clear descriptions and explanations. Your articles are superb and should be saved for future reference. One question remains: Why and how did the resistor fail? What loaded it? Hope you will clarify this point for me. I can see that it was burst and that is why I am curious.
