In reply to <a href="https://jestineyong.com/fixing-es-china-kit-in-crt-tv/comment-page-1/#comment-316177">Parasuraman</a>.

Having gone thru the comments regarding Chinese Crt kits I must admit that you've covered it fairly well and can be taken as a reasonable guide by all aspiring technicians working to cover this interesting but fast fading field of domestic Crt servicing. As someone of the same age, exp & covering more or less the same spectrum of electronics as a technician in Mangalore, India I feel that there are still many experienced and capable technicians or rather"artists" who not only service old sets well, but also use all possible ways and means in order to get an old set, not only a crt tv but almost any and every consumer unit and give it back to a happy customer inspite of the many issues that he may have to face in doing so. The reason for this may be many like fascination, sentimental attachment, dissatisfaction with today's products etc. The reasons are many. But at the end of the day I'm equally dismayed to learn that this breed is fast becoming an endangered species because of many many reasons. Dwindling customers as well as sets along with imp spares as well as the age factor that also cools down any persons previously hot or warm enthusiasm for the same. Remember a service technician of the era that we are referring to,s work is similar to that of a doc. The diff is that a doc has only 2 models(3rd model is rare) whose medical problems are very well studied and documented from a very wide and varied sources. But a ST for electronics should have the capacity to repair a really wide variety of electronic apparatus covering a vast and wide field. By sim comparison I won't be exaggerating if I state that while an accomplished ST could handle almost anything, a doc should be able to (service) handle all types of complaints affecting all kinds of marine as well as animal life. Detecting, contemplating, and servicing a unit as a service job entails many issues, similar to a police officer handling a crime like murder or arson. He has to listen to clues given by the customer, look at the affected area and go thru the many possibilities that could be the cause of a failure of a component (murder) arson (lots of peripheral damage) or accidents (external damage caused by external causes or by customer etc). Embarking on this field is was part of a fascination for the field for many of us many decades back whose satisfaction was often only getting the equip bk in running condition. Finally contrary to public perception, a ST job isn't all that well paying. Many of them may be still chasing that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the proverbial rainbow. These are some of the few words that I can say to all aspiring and budding technicians. It may be'adventurous' and the road may be rocky, but if you are really into it you may have that elusive'job satisfaction' that eludes many trades. Thank you one and all for"hanging on" to my post all this time. Take care. Bye

I have done many such replacements. Board level repair was done only in one case, because customer continued to use the TV, in spite of my instructions not to switch on when they reported hissing noise. We have to do preventive maintenance on the new board such as (1) 100% reflow of all soldering points (2) Replace SMPS switching and H-out transistors with better ampere rated like 1802 and 1803 and if necessary, the tank capacitor and rectifier diodes. (3) Horizontal width can be adjusted through service mode or changing capacitor value slightly.

Leaking at anode is common for every CRT TV because of damp weather and fungus growth.

Thank you very much Parasuraman. There are always people better, faster or younger than we are I guess, no reason to degrade your expertise on this subject. You still have provided a Master class course in repairing defect CRT TV sets. The built in program to check X-ray emission by checking the current flow feedback from LOT and automatic shutdown sounds safe. I've checked the above buying link you gave. I didn't see any kit like yours with Infrared remote control. Seems hard to choose the right kit? Also most if not all sets are with the Secam color system. Probably because India is the greatest or one of the biggest selling markets. Here we only use the update of the old USA NTSC color system called PAL which means Phase Alternating Line. On our tv boards we use a 4.43 Mhz quartz (or a 8.86 Mhz) for our Pal decoders. And I believe that it is a 3.54 quartz crystal on USA TV boards. They also sell small TV receiver boards now with remote that can transfer an old LCD screen into a TV receiver. I bought one last year, unprogrammed without FW, for about 12 euro. But the Chinese Firmware and the many installing versions and choosing the right Firmware version made it quite impossible for me to use and install the TV board. It just didn't work without decent instructions! (it was a waste of money I'm afraid to say. And the Chinese on screen menu didn't help). About using old CRT monitors... people who use them in Arcade Gaming Machines/consoles still think they are faster and more enjoyable for fast pixel action games. More authentic at least. But that is probably like electric guitar players who still prefer the old Amplifiers with tubes in them. If we only had more space for those older and larger, more current consuming devices it would make more sense to restore and keep them all. Cheers and again thanks for taking the time to write this article!
