MAKE AND MODEL: Locally assembled 5.1 Amp set – It is not original Sony

COMPLAINT REPORTED: Two outputs dead, USB/FM not working, HUM noise.

TROUBLESHOOTING AND RECTIFICATION DONE: Opened the set and cleaned it. I did not venture to remove the boards and clean the inside thoroughly as the interconnecting wires were so flimsy that any movement would break it away. Even if we take good snaps, which of-course I did, reconnecting it would be a difficult job. And, this is not a set worth spending a lot of efforts!

On powering up and checking it by injecting audio signals, I could trace the two outputs that did not work. The USB/FM unit was not functioning though getting on. The IC on it was heating up indicating a failure. So replaced the unit. Replaced the two TDA2030 ICs. (Two to three wires got cut while doing this!) The set came back to life and worked very well. Lubricated the controls and switches with switch cleaning oil. All its functions were checked for proper working. Mission accomplished and satisfaction got added.

I guess that this device was only marked being a Sony but that the label was added on this home made audio set to make it look original?

Readymade cabinets are coming in the market like that. Anyone can easily make out that it is a local make. Sony is printed on it and not a sticker.

Not only the cabinets but when one looks more closely will see other problems: a wiring harness badly executed, the power supply doesn't have a circuit board (the rectifiers are not seen, perhaps floating) and there is a misalignment in one of the yellow (or amber) circuit boards (as one can see comparing the relative position of the two boards). Anyhow, your repair work continues to follow the same way: fast, well done and effective. And with a good and technical writing style. Thanks for sharing (201!!!!)

Thanks for another great article, they are always very informative! I am new to these audio repairs, can you elaborate a bit more on how you “injected audio signals”?

I have an audio signal injector. Kindly see my previous articles. I have explained about the use of it. https://jestineyong.com/servicing-philips-tv-tester-808tvt/
