However, here in the UK, earth pins on mains plugs are always male. This applies to the current "square" pin plugs and also to the earlier round pin plugs.

Only caused by a defect power led, open fuse, and bad power cable. A lesser experienced engineer probably never would have noticed this to be an easy repair.
