Gate Controller Board With A Nasty Burn Repaired Using Soldering Mask

A guy next door brought me a gate controller for repair. the guy explained that the board has a nasty burn and a very bad smell but he want it to get fixed as soon as possible otherwise he has to buy a new functional board.

I took the sockets off board to reveal the actual burn and from the look of it, it is nasty one and it has to be addressed.

First I had to do some cleaning and take some components off board to reveal if there are any traces loose or burned and fix them.

That is also a nasty burn on the other side of the board as well and has to be address as well. After cleaning and knowing where all the lines and traces go I started to connect these to the best of my ability.

I took the main fuse off board and revealed a broken trace under that fuse holder which was heading to the main relay pin. I cleaned the burnt area and applied a soldering mask then connected a wire to complete the connection to the one of the main socket.

I also cleaned the other side of the board and added soldering mask as well. Of course the soldering mask has to be dried up first so I used an Ultra violet light for almost 30 second along with a heat from my heat gun; it was solid in no time.

As seen in the photo, the fuse was soldered back on board which by the way, it was intact. Cleaned the board again with alcohol and made sure everything looks nice and clean then connected to 220 AC volts and the power came on.

I contacted the customer and since it cannot be tested in the shop, he had to take it on location for real testing and called me later on that it was functional the way it should be. I was not expecting it to work because of the burning involved but was happy that it did.

Mission Accomplished.

Indeed a fast and easy repair where we maybe at least should have suspected a bad relay!
