Guest Post- SAMSUNG 32″ LCD TV LA 32R91B IS REPAIRED.

samsung ld tv repairedlcd tv repair samsung

All the functions of this lcd tv were good except  the contrast and brightness controls. When I decreased the contrast and brightness to 50 %, after few minutes it automatically shot up again to 100%. My first suspect was the corrupted program file of EEPROM IC . Since I do not have the original programs I tried to check on the voltages to see if the voltages stable or not.

samsungtv2

repair lcd tv

I measured the output voltages from the power supply and found two voltages were good (13v and 12 v). But the 5 volt line seems to be unstable and fluctuated. After that I saw an electrolytic capacitor that was bulged located along the 5 volt line.

bulged ecaps

The cap value was 2200 micro farad @ 10 volt 105 C and when tested with my capacitance meter it showed only 32 micro farad. The capacitance value was way out. I checked the same capacitor again with my ESR meter and it showed 2 ESR ohm. By right it should have about 0.02 ESR ohm. After a new replacement was done the control functions of the contrast and brightness  of the TV was back to normal again.

samsungtv5

Note:  I changed the bad cap with new one.   2200micro @ 16volt 105 c   and this works with no problem.

Conclusion : An  exact  and stable voltage is a must for the supply of microcontroller IC.

Enjoy repairing

Thanks for the valuable article. Is it a way to check whether it is a software problem or hardware problem for this case?

      HI Mohammed,
It depends on the problem. If the hardware no problem then you have to suspect software/firmware.

good to here you've retrieved your website thanks for the information you've been giving me though am an electrician i find it useful since it makes me repair few electronic gadgets. Do you have a school where you train people to become expert in electronic repairs?
i would like to enrol and how much would it cost me?

      Hi Henry,

They must have otherwise they would not know if the e-cap is good or bad. Or they can just direct replace and retest. Nowadays ESR meter is not expensive and every repairers should own one. As for the conversion sorry i do not have info on this.

Hi Mr Yong in respond to the question asked how to detect a fuulty cap without an ERS meter particularly in switch power supply, mesurement of the voltage at that point always show lower than normal voltage also a scope will show high waveform almost as high as that at the input of the rectifier.
Substituting with a known good cap of equal value and voltage will confirm doubt

          HI Austin,

You are right but in many cases it would cause no power and there is no chance for you to perform voltage/signal test with your meter or scope. Having the ESR meter is still a better way in finding those bad e-caps without turning the power on.

Great blog,I had a similar problem with a polaroid 50 inch, the power just went off, found out it was the four main caps, why do these big manufactures use substandard components. Replaced them with the same farad value but slightly higher voltage rating,no problems since.
    thanks Jestine

      HI Kevin,

Most probably is the overall manufacturing cost. This is why my friend that sell TVs told me that nowadays LCD TVs quality was not as good as those days. By the way, if they fixed good and long lasting capacitor we may have less repair work to do.
