I have seen one like this experiment on y-tube where they used an actual magnet instead of the insulated wire..which is almost the same idea..but this is wonderful.

There are toys out there that contains training kits for basic electricity, science, chemistry and physics. One is Ein-O where you can build your own electric motor similar to the picture above.
And it really works! You have a magnetic wires, permanent magnets, a compass, alligator clips, etc. Just follow the instructions and voila, you have your first home made electric motor!
You can experiment the number of turns, the quantity of the magnets, distance, etc and its effect on the performance of the motor.
A good toy for adults too!
