Ipad Screen Colour Distorted Repaired
Phones and tablets suffer from a range of mishaps.
They can be sat on, dropped, thrown, twisted, have fluids spilt on them, items dropped on them, food and crumbs pushed into them. All in all, they have a hard life!
It’s good to have a change of repair. Usually one of these poor pieces of hardware are brought in for a screen replacement, which depending on the screen price and amount of work, can raise the price of the repair. However, in this case, the repair was inexpensive and relatively easy to carry out.
While it appears quite drastic to the customer, the repair is mainly due to a bad connection. Let’s start the tear-down.
Firstly, heat needs to be applied to the outside of the tablet to gently warm the double sided tape used to hold the digitiser to the housing. The heat gun needs to be moved regularly so as not to create hot spots that may damage the electronics.
After using a selection of picks, spudgers and anything else that will squeeze between the digitiser and frame, the tablet opens like a book. Be careful to support the digitiser, so that the wiring does not get damaged.
Next, the video screen needs to be removed – 4 screws in the case of this iPad.
At this point, check for and repair any damage that may have been caused to the tablet, especially the corners where it may have landed when dropped. Once the screen is raised, a wire clip needs to be lifted to release the connector.
At this point, the connector needs to be checked for damage and if in good condition, be re-seated, making sure that it is firmly held in place. Push the retaining clip back into place.
Even with the tablet partially assembled, you can test to make sure that you have fixed the colour problem. The accompanying video shows how.
The next step is crucial. Spend plenty of time cleaning the screen and back of the digitiser with a clean microfibre cloth. Remember, once it is all reassembled, any fingerprints or dirt will be there permanently.
I prefer to fit a new bezel, which surrounds the digitiser and new specially formed double sided tape, which makes the process of reassembling the tablet easier and ensures a professional, quality job.
Gently remove the backing tape with tweezers to make sure that the double-sided tape stays in place.
Push the digitiser back in place, verifying that the corners are correctly located. It may be a good idea to pile a few books on top of the tablet on a table, making sure that you cover it with a cloth to protect the screen from scratches until the tape adhesive completely cures.
Once reassembled and confirming that the fault is repaired, you can hand the tablet back to a satisfied customer.

good job on the repair. I had issues like that before and most of time, just re seating the flex cable back in or dirty connections.

Yes Waleed, correct. In this case, the customer dropped the tablet which dislodged the connector. All that was needed was to reseat the connector.

I've done some research and it turns out that Suranga did an article on a Singer TV repair.

It does seem that they are hard to get parts for aftermarket. It might be worth contacting Suranga to see where he located parts. I believe that he ended up using genuine parts.

Good job, Mark! The number one problem that I see with tablets is busted digitizers. So far none of the busted digitizers has damaged the LCD screens. I am getting pretty good at replacing digitizers!

Hey Robert, yes the digitiser is usually what gets broken, but several times I have seen this connector become dislodged and the digitiser stays unbroken. The main concern is to remove the digitiser without breaking it yourself!

Yes, that would be tricky! After I heated the digitizer up, I would also put some alcohol around the edge to help weaken the adhesive.
