the foam ring that was helping hold the speakers in place went bad. I had this happen in a few cases.

I think speaker Build quality is not good, laptop is only 3 years old.

Which could have been any too loud base in the Harmon speakers while playing any music. Although 1 Watt and the limited power of the internal laptop amplifier normally would have prevented this?
