Received one laptop in my workshop with the problem of – Horizontal line color Bar at bottom of the screen. Look at the photo below:

laptop color bar problem

This laptop is HP Pavilion DV6 Series. This symptom indicates three possible faulty sections which cause this symptom.

1)      Motherboard Graphic chip related.

2)      LVDS Cable

3)      Screen itself BAD.

First I have connected the laptop with my external monitor to check the symptom on the screen. And I found screen is clear there is no Color Bar Fault so this symptom will eliminate one suspect part that is Motherboard because it doesn’t show fault and screen works fine. Now two suspected parts left. It is either the LVDS cable or the Screen itself.

So I have dismantled the screen of the laptop by removing two screws at the front bottom edge of the screen. On visual inspection I did not found any physical damage or burnt mark.

So I have removed the LVDS Cable and checked for physical damage (You can do a continuity test because some time Cable can get cut from Hinge side) and for oxidation on pins but seem OK and clean. So for my confirmation I have cleaned the connector with IPA and reattached the cable to see the result but still the same problem.

So now it is time to check the next suspected item which was the Screen.

For testing of the screen you have to buy new screen. I have ordered a new screen. After arrival of new screen I have connected to the laptop and powered on the laptop and I found problem was resolved.

Applied paper Tape for Holding the Cable in the connector firmly so that it won’t get loose on jerk.

Now, laptop is ready and wait for the customer to collect it back.

Really I don't know, but only guessing. Since the magnet is on the edge of the screen, is there a proximity switch directly across from the magnet location when the cover is closed? Keep up the good work, I love reading your articles.

      Ronald ,

You are right this is for lid sensor which activate power shutdown (Power saving) mode for the screen when you close the lid without shutdown your laptop.

I think it activates the reed switch in the base to turn off the display when you close the cover?

Perhaps it was placed there to open or close a Reed Switch. I used magnets on CRT TVs to correct convergence at times, but on a LCD screen, I'm guessing as I don't have the laptop in front of me.

      Stephen,
This is for activating lid sensor which turn off power to the lid when you are closing the lid without power off the laptop.

I guess that Ronald is correct. That is most likely the reason why the magnet is placed in the LCD screen. Just recently I found a laptop with exactly the same fault but it wasn't possible to check the gpu chip with an external monitor. (without an existing Windows OS installed the screen external switching mode often simply doesn't work). So this means another defect screen that needs replacement.

      Albert,
Right guess!some new series of laptops does not required OS or GPU Switch while connecting the external monitor(even you can connect projector also) right from bios you can see the screen. Some laptops have an external display "auto-switch" feature, which can be configured in the BIOS of the Laptop.
