Today a customer sent to me his Acer Aspire E1-531 laptop with keyboard problem. The problem was his kid splash a glass of juice over the keyboard. After a day or two the keyboard stops working. After my inspection, I could feel that sticky feeling of the juice.

Therefore, I decide to take out the keyboard and try to wash it. See the picture how to remove the keyboard, it is pretty simple. You need a screwdriver and bit of patience…

This is the Acer Aspire E1-531

Put the screwdriver gently and unlock all around the keyboard.

Lift the keyboard but take care of the flat cable under the keyboard.

I then splashed the keyboard with mix of demineralized (distilled) water and soap-see the photo below:

The reason why I use demineralized water for washing electronic pcb or so is because that type of water have less ions and so it did not conduct electricity compared to tap water.

After the washing, I took out the moisture protective foil from the keyboard and dry it with a hair dryer, sun, or whatever. This protective foil protects the inner side of the laptop from entering minimal amount fluid drops. If you leave on until you dry the keyboard you will get steam under the foil and your keyboard won’t be dry.

After this surgery, I reassembled and tested the keyboard and it was working fine.

Hi Yogesh, thanks you because you support my article.
I personally do not use alcohol in my service. It is flammable, I dont like how it smells. Ok, that is only one side of why I dont use it, but, the other side is that alcohol, even Isopropyl or not, it will dissolve ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, many oils, alkaloids, gums and natural resins and other stuff too. It could be dangerous ( must not be in every situation ) for the compound glues which is used on a keyboard or other stuff. It will dissolve the colors of the letters but must not happen.
For me is better to buy distilled water and put detergent for kitchen in.
Distilled water is demineralized and have no minerals in it which could left over any traces of dirty. Did not conduct current so can not harm for electronic connections or so. Alcohol evaporate too fast and maybe dont clean all the dirty stuff from hidden places from the keyboard and so.
      This is only my opinion...

That's how we did it at our Repair centre. But also with normal Tap Water and some Soap. Always better then the previous state of the sticky Keyboard as it was not working.
And if that didn't help we replaced it by a new one. Always much cheaper then buying a new laptop.

By the way Christian, did you disarm the keyboard into parts or pieces? That's what I saw in your last photo.

No, I pulled out the keyboard and separated only the protective foil.
All other parts was not separated.

Thank you Henry for supporting my article.
In my country I can buy distilled water on every gas station.
It is used in summer time in cars as cooling liquid too.
      My best regard.

That's true, Chris. I also use distilled water in the sponge for my soldering iron.
