LCD TV With Strange Colors Repaired. Model: Sansui 3210
An LCD TV was brought to my shop for repair. It is 32 inches TV and when I powered on the device, I saw a strange color formation on the screen. Take a look
From experience, this an issue that I see a lot on LCD TV sets and the main cause for it is the T-Con board.
I usually I replace the whole board but today, since I know the cause of the issue, I decided to replace only the part that has to do with this fault.
This is the T-con board; it is suppose to get 12 DC volts at the main fuse of it and the reading was there because I could see a picture on the screen.
The main IC that has to do with colors is called the Gama IC and the part number is AS15G. It is clearly marked by an arrow in the picture. How did I know it was a faulty IC? Well, turn the TV on and put your finger on it, you will feel it getting hot and that is enough indication that it was faulty.
With re flow hot station and some flux paste on this IC I was able to take it off board and replace it with a new one that I bought off an online seller.
I bought a lot of them actually because they get faulty very often.
Once I cleaned the area of the old IC, added some flux paste to it and with a r flow station with hot are set to 350 C temperature and the air flow to 80 I was able to put the IC back and test the TV set.
As you can see, there is a big difference in the picture display on this set. The customer was happy to get it back because he was not expecting to get fixed.

Very nice component based repair. Not something I've seen a lot happening with that same discolouring problem. But if buying a lot of those same chips cuts you a deal for fast fixing other similar T-con boards it sure is a smart move!

nice repair article once faced same faulty but managed to solve it by getti into factory mode of the tv set and changed the rvds map to another value

Jkimmachona: yes, there are some repair situation that you can enter the factory mode and resolve it but when the IC is very hot when turning the TV on, the factory mode will not change the issue. The Gama IC was shorted and when replaced, the ic had a normal heat and the TV was back to normal.

Nice work, Waleed! Nice soldering also. I use 360C to remove IC's and 340C to solder them, along with using my board preheater.
I would be afraid of blowing resistors and capacitors all over the place if I used 80% air! Did you use a rework tip designed to fit that IC?
I am getting pretty good at microsoldering!

Careful and intelligent repair, these tiny chips require technical expertise and professional know-how, as you mentioned there is behind your work an experience that helps to solve complicated failures without delay, what a joy to draw a smile on the face of the customer after a successful troubleshooting. Can you give me same more detailled indications? If one IC in a PCB it is hot, then is a clear indication that is a faulty IC? Or could an Ic be a bit hot and be not faulty? How many seconds could you touch the Gamma IC till you sense the need to retire the finger?

Francisco: thanks. this IC was burning hot not just worm..it will burn your finger. in my case it was few seconds and I could not touch the IC any more. usually, when colors are bad in a tV set, first thing I check is the voltage reading at the T-con and you suppose to get 12 DC volts. if you are getting that, then move on to this chip and feel it
