led tv no sound

Customer sent in this BG LED TV with the complaint of no sound. I had tested it and indeed it was no sound even though I have set the volume control to maximum.

For your information the common fault for no sound can be due to loosen speakers cable, bad audio output IC, missing or improper dc supply voltage to audio IC section and even corrupted memory IC data. The below photo are the circuit boards tat can be seen when the cover was removed.

As a repairer, one should always check the easiest problem first which is to locate to see if the speakers are properly connected or not. I found that the speakers cable were good except that the speakers does not have any ohm measurement when tested the two input points of the speakers with Ohmmeter. To me, it was an open circuit and I found it to be rare case because speakers rarely open up at the same time. But in this case, both speakers had an open reading.

I took out both the speakers and replaced with new one and the sound came back.

Conclusion- Assuming if both the speakers are still good then my next move will be to measure the Audio Output IC dc supply and may look into the memory ICs as well. If you wish to learn more repair tricks about LCD and LED TV repair you can check on Kent’s ebooks HERE.

Thank you for the article. I understand that you didn't need to take any next step in reparing this device Suranga. Which you wrote about in your conclusion, and that both speakers still kept working. I believe this blowing up speakers thing is a common problem when for instance in class A amplifiers the DC current burns through the loudspeaker coils. High generated temperatures easily can turn the coils in distroying hot heating elements.

Both open might be rare, unless perhaps one burnt out and the owner just kept using it on the other.

In my opinion, the root cause for this failure is yet to be ascertained. If I were you, I would have checked all the components in and around audio IC, to obviate the chance of any leaky components. The set is likely to have different audio modes, controlled through uController. That should also be checked! Some questions to customer like how this happened, when and what did they do immediately prior to it etc. can provide some clue. In all probability, the set might come back or go to someone else soon!

Good repair Suranga, but I think you should look for what caused the damage of both speakers.
