There are variety of types of the external HDD available in the market so the solutions may not applicable to all the types.
Try to use USB "Y" cable because some External drives need more power to reach the peak latency.or if you are technical guy just open the external drive unit remove the HDD and connect it in the PC Motherboard Using appropriate DATA and power connector and retrieve the data.....But if you are not technical guy do not try to open the HDD external casing or you will the destroy the HDD beyond chances of DATA recovery.you can try it buying a new external HDD Casing also.

This process is OK if you are technical guy and aware of the technology. But personally i feel that if you want to use any External HDD/USB just use it as a backup device and do not keep it attached to the device while not in use.Once you transferred your data just disconnect it from the device.
Because you are attaching it on external USB Port which doesn't having any lock system which can hold the connector cable tightly /firmly .If device get the jerk cable get loose from the USB Port and you will loss all your work.

I would suggest you connect your HDD to a sata or Pata port (depending on the HDD interface) to a computer to see if the drive is visible by the bios and the windows. AS I have found that external drive case's can fail.

It is possible that there is no actual drive letter assigned to your external drive or it has one that already is used by an internal device. When this happens the hdd drive will be invisible to the Explorer window. You can check and change this in Windows Configuration and its tools. But I can't give you the exact English toolnames because I'm Dutch and my Windows is too. Or just use any free Partition Manager (careful not the delete anything!) to see if it detects your hdd device. Good luck!

And the customer probably also can still use other boot options like using an USB memory stick with a prepared Windows image on it. Or use an external hdd with an boot image on it. Although those options if they work of course are much slower.
