Yes, I fully agree with you. But the availability of a new program loaded IC was remote and if it all we could get one, it could end up as a fake. That's why I looked for an old board. Secondly, connecting the uController using thin wires is a tough task for me at my age (70 years), because almost all 80 pins might have to be rewired! So, I did not attempt.

The customer was gracious enough to pay the charges including my conveyance expenses. As a general practice, I never attempt to cover up my mistakes, however grave it might be and my experience with customers is that they stand with us and take it sportively.

We have to remove the B+ to the HOT or better to remove the transistor. Then connect an LED between the emitter and base. The LED will remain lit because of the Horizontal pulse pumped by the uController. If it does not work, the problem could be in the Horizontal driver section or the uController going to standby mode due to protection, a special design done in some CRT TVs. This is a very simple method to test the Horizontal deflection pulse input. I have found this method very useful.

Knowing about all the frustating facts that hunted this repair it must have been a real nightmare that turned into a daymare this time! Sorry to see the work was finished but not entirely satisfactory. In this case I think I still would have tried to repair to copper tracks on the original "battle field" board to the NXP TDA IC because with 0.1mm or 0.2mm wire with which a lot of damages can be fixed. But of course only if that chip is available and the previously made photos of the original chip and its connections are clear enough to go on! Only if that would fail the time to find, install and adjust another board was worth it.
