Mains Cord Was The Culprit In This Philips Radio
MAKE AND MODEL: Philips RL118/00 FM-AM Radio – Thrishul
COMPLAINT REPORTED: Dead
TROUBLESHOOTING AND RECTIFICATION DONE: Opened and cleaned the set thoroughly. Found the mains cord was the culprit. The set was not working from its internal battery, which was found to be totally discharged and leaked. After replacing the mains cord, the set started working. As a preventive maintenance and part of my routine, I did dry solder patch up of the PCB and replaced the nine electrolytic capacitors. Cleaned and replaced the Rechargeable Nickel Cadmium Batteries.
Checked and found that the charger circuit was working and the set worked very well from the battery, without any external electrical disturbances. In fact, the Radio works very well from batteries than mains. After checking it for continuous running without any hitch for many hours, called up customer to come and pick up the Radio. Mission accomplished with satisfaction getting dropped to its collection bag!

From your many repairs we see that the name Philips doesn't do bad at all! Even Philips televisions sets that survived a flood at a heavy monsoon were brought back to life in the past if I'm not mistaken!

Yes, true. If you see more of Philips in articles, is it good or bad, though I do agree they are of good quality! Yes, it survived floods. But is it still alive, is a question mark, as customer would never turn back to us, if it becomes bad again! In all probability, they would go for a new one!

Sir, your thorough observation about faulty main line of RL 118 is a shame on Philips. I am facing the same problem. Pl inform where to get main chord?

The same radio connect ac mains and switch on humming only, after 1 minit humming clear and audio ok, working in battery clear.

Sir, now a days most of portable electronic equipment comes with rechargeable battery and most of time we found battery is completely drained and are unusable because equipment is not in regular use. some peoples are kick start or jump start the battery for reviving as i have already try out practically and it works i will share in my article soon.

Yes, it is true. But in this case, the battery was not in a condition to jump start using an electrolytic cap. I always prefer to replace, though!
