i have a section in my workshop for repairing house hold equipment and one of them is the iron. it is so much fun to open them and finding what is wrong with them. usually I find the main switch on and off had gone bad. with sand paper just like you did, it brings it back to life. thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day

I would have used a high voltage MEGGER to check for leakage. Lucky the home owner had a good earth system! It is indeed amazing how much dust and fluff accumulates inside a iron. This also becomes a hazard when steam ironing your clothes. The moisture finds it way into the iron causing the rust and poor insulation.
