Not Easy To Run Your Own Repair Business

By on August 8, 2012

Do you know that it is not easy to run your own repair business? I have many emails from fellow ERG members telling me that they wanted to set up their own repair business. My replied to them was always make sure they have enough customer base before resigning from their fulll time job and start on their own. Motivation will drop if you do not see profits after few months running your own shop. Rental to pay, electricity, phone bill, your salary and other expeneses need to be considered before you really come out on your own.

The age factor is also important. If you are on your own and after running the business for couple of years and you can't sustain it and wish to join back working for others, you may have a tough time looking for a job. Many companies usually looking for someone younger and have experience.

If you have a stable job then I recommends you to run it from your home first. See how is the profit for the first half to one year. If it is stable and growing then you may consider to go full time.

The reason i wrote this post is not to pour cold water on you but because I have personnally went through all the difficulty in running a repair business. Seeing some of my repair friends closed their shop and joined back the 9 to 5 work is a fact. There could be many reasons why they are not successful. It could be lack of marketing skills, not skillful enough in repairing, lack of fund management, need to spend more time with family and etc.

If you still wish to set up your own business then I'm wishing you all the best.

      HI Waleed,

Getting another job to sustain our expenses is also a good idea. Hope it will work well.

      HI Jojo,

Please do not rush to set up a repair center on your own. Take into consideration of all expenses in order to avoid regret later.

      Hi Humphrey,

If you could make money more than your full time job then it could be a sign that you may have to set your own.

In the United States, repair shops are closing rapidly, there are very few left. The U.S. consumer finds it easier and cheaper to throw away a defective TV, DVD player, microwave oven, radio, etc. and buy a new one than to take it in for repair and wait while it is being fixed.

      Hi Rohmell,

Yes I have heard of it too but electronics repair not necessary have to deal directly with consumer electronics repair. There are alarm cctv, parking system, industrial electronics, beauty equipment, medical electronics just to name a few.
