The complaint with this Olik active speaker was the USB port and the display were not functioning. See the photo below of the no display symptom.

To me the problem more like a no power symptom in the USB circuit board.

The first thing I did was to remove the cover and access to the USB card and check for the dc supply. Most USB card uses 5 volt DC to operate and my voltmeter registered 5 volt when measuring on the DC supply. This means the power supply was good and the problem is in the USB card itself.

I did another careful looked at the USB card and found that those ICs used were not common (hardly can be found in the market). It could be the program had corrupted but because I do not have access to the parts and the program, I told myself that this problem was not worth to repair.

So I bought the whole new USB card from the market and replace it and soldered the Antenna wire too at the back of the card.

Once done fixing the USB card and powered On, the display lighted up as seen from the photo below:

In certain cases only, it is not really worth the time to repair the circuit board due to the unavailability of the parts. Besides the customer can get his device back sooner as possible if I directly replaced the card.  Ok, hope to see you again in the next article.

Repairing a defect old board indeed is not worth the time searching for replacement parts or waiting on them to arrive especially if the board can be bought completely new. And this new board even looks almost identical to the old defect one anyhow! Which fits in place without any problem too! Seeing the name Olik on the quite heavy device, it must have been a funny manufacturer who turned its weight around from Kilo to Olik? Thank you for sharing your successful repair Suranga.

So true Suranga, the price of complete circuit boards in comparison to the availability of some components make it hard to repair at a component level. Well done on the diagnosis.

Thanks Suranga for all the wonderful articles you have written and posted. Your articles always interest me.

My sentiments exactly, is not really worth the time to repair the circuit board due to the unavailability of the parts. More over these cards are now available at a very low and reasonable price. I beleive that is the route technology is advancing today, pluck and play. Hence everything will be made to modules and reduce to cards and components.

Good job, Suranga. Sometimes we can't even get new boards. But it's nice when we can get the parts to fix devices and save them from the trash.
